Cooking Beef Casserole in a Crockpot

There are various ways to cook beef but crockpot cooking brings out the juiciness and flavor of beef really well. You can cook the toughest beef cuts in a slow cooker and it will come out succulent and delicious because of the moist, slow cooking method.

One of the most popular slow cooker recipes of all time is beef casserole. This is such a simple dish but there are so many different ingredients you can choose from. Classic ingredients include potatoes, onion and carrot but you can also use other vegetables such as zucchini, yam, rutabaga, broccoli and more, depending on what you have to use up and what flavor you are aiming for.

Why We Love Casseroles

Casserole recipes are simple to make and satisfying to eat. Not only can you add any meat, vegetables and flavors you like but you can choose from thick and rich casseroles to thin, watery ones.

Serve either of these over a mound of mashed potatoes or rice and you have a rich, filling and truly delicious dinner. The crockpot could have been invented solely for making casseroles because they come out so incredibly well.

You can make beef casserole, chicken casserole, pork casserole or even fish casserole in a slow cooker and the ingredients will merge their flavors in the same way, resulting in a flavorful dish which everyone will be impressed with. A lot of crockpot casserole recipes also freeze well so you can make a huge casserole and freeze half for another occasion.

Recipe for German Beef Casserole

This delicious crockpot recipe is easy to make and combines beef with carrots and an assortment of spices and flavorings including molasses, tomatoes, sherry and ginger. This is a rich and tasty dish and a real winter warmer of a meal. Serve this German style beef casserole with bread for mopping up the wonderful juices.

You will find that the sherry and ginger add a special elegance to this beef casserole. Some beef casserole recipes feature beer or red wine to enhance the beef flavor but the sherry also goes well. The ginger lends the dish a trace of oriental flavor without detracting from the European influence.

This is a really special recipe. If you like, you can omit the potato and serve it with some mashed potatoes on the side instead. Of course you will have to make those on the stove.

What you will need:

1 1/2 lbs beef chuck
2 cups carrots, sliced thinly
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup water
1/4 cup dark molasses
16 oz can diced tomatoes in juice
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup sherry
1 potato, chopped
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

How to make it:

Cut the beef into two inch cubes and add it to the crockpot. Sprinkle the ginger, pepper, salt and garlic powder on top, then add the rest of the ingredients and stir briefly. Cover the slow cooker and cook for six to eight hours on low. Stir and serve hot.

Beef cooks so nicely in a slow cooker and one of the best crockpot recipes of all time has to be beef casserole. Leave this delicious meal simmering away in the slow cooker all day and you will get home to a kitchen that smells amazing and a meal which is all ready to serve.

Cooking With a Crockpot - How to Convert Recipes to the Crockpot

How many times have you been planning meals and came up disappointed when you discovered you didn't have time to make the meal you wanted? Most people will not even think of putting a recipe in the crockpot unless it is written expressly for the crockpot. Did you know that many standard recipes could be converted to crockpot recipes?

The low setting of most crockpots is around 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The high setting is about 300 degrees Fahrenheit. An hour of cooking on the high setting is about the same as 2 to 2.5 hours of cooling on the low setting. You will find that most recipes for crockpots recommend cooking the food for around 8 to 10 hours on low.

Advice for Converting Recipes to Use in a Crockpot

When you convert a recipe to the crockpot, there are a few tips you will want to keep in mind. You will want to reduce the amount of liquid the recipe calls for. In the crockpot, liquid does not evaporate. You normally wind up with quite a bit of liquid at the end of cooking time. Reduce the amount of liquid you add to the dish by half, unless you are also using rice or pasta.

The spices you use may need to be adjusted. Ground spices may lose some flavor over many hours of cooking, so do not add them until the last hour of cooking. Whole spices will have their flavors intensified by long cooking times, so you may want to reduce them by half.

If you plan to make chicken soup or other liquid-based meals, only add enough liquid to cover the other ingredients. You can add more liquid towards the end of cooking time if needed. If you are making a cream soup, do not add the dairy products until close to the end to prevent curdling and separating.

You can make dried beans in the crockpot. Cook them overnight on low instead of spending the time soaking them. Add your beans and then cover them with water. Add a teaspoon of baking soda. In the morning, drain the beans before combining them with your other ingredients. Bean soup, chili, and other tasty meals can then proceed in the crockpot as usual.

Not All Foods Love Crockpots

Be aware that some foods do not fare well when cooking for 8 to 10 hours. Rice, pasta, seafood, some vegetables, and dairy products are all too delicate for such long cooking times. When making a dish that contains these ingredients, do not add them until the last couple of hours before serving when your pot is set on low. If you are cooking on high, hold off until the last hour before adding these delicate ingredients. If you really must have milk added to a recipe early on, try evaporated milk.

Browning your meat can be done before adding it to the crockpot to add that lovely coloring. Browning may also reduce the fat content a little bit on some kinds of meat. Browning is optional, however. Roasts can turn out very flavorful in the crockpot with or without it

Save Time and Eat Healthy With the Crockpot

The crockpot can be the perfect tool to use for saving time in the kitchen while still eating healthy, delicious meals. Simply add the ingredients of your choice, turn on the crockpot, leave the house for the whole day if necessary, and then return to a home filled with the most delectable aromas.

Most everyone enjoys a tasty chicken dinner and there are so many different ways to prepare this type of meat, and especially when using crockpot recipes.

Salsa crockpot chicken is one incredibly easy recipe to make and uses only two inexpensive ingredients; the chicken and the salsa. Use three pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs and a 16-ounce jar of the salsa of your choice. Combine both together in your crockpot and cook on the low setting for six to eight hours or until the chicken is tender and cooked thoroughly.

Alternatively, if you want to use boneless chicken breasts instead of thighs, adjust the cooking time to five to six hours on the low setting or until the meat is cooked completely.

If you want a thicker salsa chicken dish, take the lid off the crockpot and turn the setting to high for the last half hour or so. Adding in a few tablespoons of cornstarch and a quarter cup of water to the mixture will also help to thicken the dish.

For a low fat and low sodium dish, try combining chicken, apples, chicken broth, and seasonings in the crockpot for a delicious creation.

How to Make Chicken and Apples in the Crockpot

What You Need

6 ounce can frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed
2 teaspoons curry powder
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons butter
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
Salt and pepper to taste
6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thickly sliced
1/3 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons cornstarch

How to Make It

Combine the thawed apple juice, the curry powder, and the nutmeg in a small bowl.

In a small saucepan, melt the butter, onions, and garlic and heat until the onions are soft and nearly translucent. Put the onion mixture in the bottom of the crockpot.

Add each piece of chicken to the juice mixture, coating each piece thoroughly before adding to the crockpot. Next, add a few pinches of salt and pepper to taste.

Put your crockpot on the low setting and cook the chicken for five to six hours, or until almost cooked through.

Add the apples and cook all ingredients on low for another 45 minutes to an hour or until the chicken is thoroughly cooked and the apples are nice and tender.

In another small bowl, mix the chicken broth and cornstarch together and stir the mixture into the ingredients in the crockpot. Cover the crockpot and cook on the high setting until the sauce is thicker, usually about 10 to 15 minutes. You will have to stir the mixture occasionally so do not worry about removing the crockpot's lid.

The very best crockpot recipes are simple to make and include easy to find ingredients that cook well together complementing each other's unique flavors. Crockpot recipes that include different cuts of chicken are typically inexpensive and can be tailored to your family's exact taste.

Gourmet Fondue Using Your Crock Pot

Now this fondue is not really a crock pot recipe however it is fun to serve it in the crock pot. And the crockpot does a fantastic job of keeping it warm.

So it you don't have a crock pot (you should get one, but that is another story), you can still make this and serve it in a fondue pot or any other pot.

Fondue is a Swiss dish having thought to date back to the 18th century. It is believed to have come about during long Switzerland winters when all that remained were some dry bread, cheese and wine.

And we are thankful for their thriftiness and culinary skills.

Traditionally at least two cheeses were melted in a dry white wine. The wine helps to keep the direct heat away from the cheese. And of course imparts an extra flavor.

This fondue is a little different in that it has no wine but chicken broth instead along with a few other surprises.

Brie and Onion Fondue

Ingredients

2 oz (50g) butter

2 medium onions

1 oz (25g) all-purpose (plain) flour

½ pint (300ml) chicken stock

12 oz (375g) Brie*

¼ pint (150ml) double cream

Method

Dice the onions finely.

Melt the butter in a pan. Add the onions and gently fry until soft (do not brown).

Sprinkle in the flour (it helps prevent the fondue from separating). Stir and cook for 2 minutes.
Gradually stir in the chicken stock ensuring it blends with the flour. Simmer gently for 5 minutes.
If you are going to serve in your crock pot - turn it on low now.
Cut the rind off the brie and discard the rind. Slice the cheese thinly.
Slowly, piece by piece, stir the cheese and the cream into the fondue. Being careful not to add too much all at once.
Cook gently, stirring occasionally until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Transfer to your warmed crock pot.
Serve with chucks of crusty bread, carrot and celery sticks, mushrooms and whatever else you like.

*Brie - use a good quality cheese. And for a different flavor try one of the new flavored bries like black pepper or herb.

Happy Dipping and Enjoy

Crock Pot Pot Roast - Easy and Quick to Prepare

Crock pot pot roasts are easy and quick to prepare. Slow cooker recipes are in general healthy recipes, since you are not frying any food. Roast are also cheaper to prepare in the slow cooker, as you do not need to buy an expensive cut of meat. After long hours of cooking, even the toughest cut of meat will become tenderized.

The slow cooker has normally two setting, low and high. I suggest you cook the meat in the low setting, so that it gets tenderized.

If you are thinking of getting a slow cooker I would suggest you get a rival one, with a removable stoneware dish. Get at least a 3 1/2 quart size with oval shape dish. In this way you can cook larger meat cuts.
The removable dish will make the cleaning process easy. Just remove the dish and wash it. Do not ever submerge the heating unit, because it will get damaged.

Here is a delicious and easy recipe for you to try it out.

You will need 3 baking potatoes, cut in quarters, 1 onion sliced, 2 carrots sliced, 2 stalks celery sliced, 1/2 tsp thyme, 1 tsp dried rosemary, 1 beef chunk roast (remember, it does not need to be an expensive cut),1/2 cup beef broth.

Trim the excess fat from the roast. Cut the roast into pieces and spice it with salt and pepper. Combine the first 6 ingredients in slow cooker. Add roast on top of veggies and pour the broth over beef. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours or until beef is tender.

Enjoy it!

When I did not have any children, cooking was not my priority, so I just got home from work and decided on what to eat for supper. Since having children, my days got shorter, and I am always looking for ways to simplify the cooking duties. I now enjoy cooking. My cooking time has been reduced and I can use my time more productively. Read more [http://www.squidoo.com/crockpotpotroast] to learn how I did it.

Healthy Vegetarian Crockpot Lasagna

Lasagna is many people's favorite Italian recipe. There are various kinds of lasagna, so whether you enjoy a classic beef lasagna, a salmon, and ricotta one or even a vegetarian lasagna, there is a recipe for you.

The main ingredient in this dish is noodles, which are several inches in diameter and rectangular; you layer these with your chosen filling in between them. This recipe is served hot, cut into squares or rectangles, and you might like to serve some parmesan cheese on the side, to sprinkle over the top.

Not only can you choose from lots of different varieties of this dish but you can also choose your preferred cooking method. This Italian recipe does not have to be baked. You can make it in your slow cooker if you want to and it comes out really nice.

Crockpot lasagna is just as good as the oven-baked kind, perhaps even better because the flavors have plenty of time to blend perfectly. The following recipe, which serves six people, is vegan, vegetarian and low calorie as well as low fat since tofu is used instead of cheese.

What You Need:

1 package silken tofu
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 box lasagna noodles
4 cups tomato sauce
20 oz frozen spinach
1/4 cup soy milk
3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1 package firm tofu
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

How To Make It:

Thaw the spinach and pat it dry. Add both types of tofu to a blender or food processor, as well as the salt, basil, garlic powder, lemon juice and soy milk and process the mixture until it is smooth. Stir in the spinach.

Add a cup of tomato sauce to the slow cooker, and then add a third of the noodles and then a third of the tofu mixture. Repeat these layers a couple of times, finishing with tomato sauce. Cook for six to eight hours on low or until the noodles are soft.

What To Serve With Lasagna

Technically this is a meal in itself and in Italy, where this dish is from, it is served alone or perhaps with a basic green salad. A couple of types of lettuce leaves and perhaps some sliced tomato or cherry tomatoes is nice, then you can have a vinaigrette dressing on top or maybe some lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. Keep the salad simple so the main focus is on the tasty entree itself.

In the United States, the United Kingdom and some other countries, this meal is commonly served with garlic bread or fries on the side, which makes it really filling but if you do not want to eat that many carbohydrates forget the fries and bread and opt for the salad instead. The pasta used in this recipe makes it satisfying enough on its own and the vegetables and herbs give plenty of nutrition.

Lasagna has to be one of the best crockpot recipes because the pasta comes out tender and the filling ingredients blend well. The overall flavor really is amazing. There are also lots of classic dishes you can make, such as crockpot beef stew.

Hot Tips On How To Make The Most Of Your Slow Cooker Crockpot!

A slow cooker crockpot is not just a great cooking appliance; it's perfect for the beginner cook as well. It is the perfect way to make dishes like macaroni and cheese extra rich and sumptuous. They are also great for making dishes like pot roast, chicken and dumplings and a host of other delicious slow cooker crockpot recipes. However, it's important to know a little bit about how these crockpots work and how to get the most out of them.

Before You Buy

Before you buy your crockpot, you'll need to consider what you'll be using it for. Remember that these cookers should only be filled about half-way or 2/3rds full when cooking. This will affect the amount of food you can actually cook in a crockpot. Small slow cookers may be ideal if you're just cooking for two.

However, if you plan on using your crockpot for big dinners like Thanksgiving or Christmas, you may want to buy something larger. Crockpots also come in different shapes and these will affect how your dish looks in the end. Another thing you should consider is what you plan on cooking in your slow cooker. For instance, chickens and large-sized roasts fit better inside an oval-shaped cooker.

A really important thing to check when buying a slow cooker crockpot is the heating element. Make sure that this element is on the bottom as well as on the sides of the cooker, for even cooking. Also make sure that the liner is removable so you can clean it easier.

If you currently have a crockpot with no liner, it's best to line it with a cooking bag before you use it. There are many different kinds of crockpots on the market today, some of which are quite advanced. Beginners should opt for simple plug-in options with just High and Low features.

Before You Cook

A slow cooker crock does work differently from conventional cooking appliances. This is why it's important to keep a few handy cooking tips in mind before you make anything. It's best to use your crockpot for the first time when you're at home. After about 4 hours of cooking on Low, test the temperature. It should be about 140 degrees F. If it isn't, you should probably get the slow cooker replaced.

For safety reasons, it is usually recommended that you cook on High for the first hour. After this, you can reduce it to Low. If you plan on putting frozen food in the slow cooker crockpot, it's best to defrost it first. If you plan on putting your cooked food in the fridge, make sure you remove it from the liner first.

When you're cooking with your slow cooker crockpot, make sure that you follow the instructions about layering. In general, vegetables should be placed on the bottom, since they do not cook as fast as meat does. Be careful about the spices and seasonings you use while cooking. Things like Tabasco sauce and cayenne pepper can become bitter if they are cooked too long.

In general, it's best to add spices during the last hour of cooking. Dairy products like cheese should generally be added during the last half hour, unless otherwise stated in the recipe. Also remember that liquids cooked in a crockpot do not evaporate away, as when cooking with an ordinary saucepan. If the recipe is not specifically for crockpot cooking, make sure that you reduce the liquid by about ½.

Buying the right kind of slow cooker crockpot can make a big difference to your slow cooker crockpot recipes. The right model and features can mean better tasting food and a longer-lasting crock pot as well.

How to Make Pork Stew in the Crockpot

Beef might be the most commonly used stew meat in crockpot cooking but pork also comes out great. The reason why beef is used so often in crockpot recipes is that the slow cooking process can convert a cheap, tough piece of beef into a really succulent piece of steak, which is tender enough to fall apart. Chicken features in a lot of crockpot dishes too but what about pork?

The following recipe shows you how to make a wonderfully creamy, rich and satisfying stew recipe using your slow cooker. Pork and apples go together beautifully and these ingredients are combined in many different recipes so crockpot pork recipes are no exception. The garlic, nutmeg, and sage also complement the flavor of the meat and elevate the overall flavor of this dish to gourmet proportions.

You can serve this for a family dinner or even if you have guests coming over. The taste of this dish is impressive and it also looks tempting. You can leave it to cook all day and then just add the final ingredients when you get home.

Adapting the Recipe

If you prefer a thinner consistency you can leave out the cornstarch but if you are going to serve this over mashed potatoes or rice you might want to make the recipe exactly as it is, so the juices soak into the rice or potatoes well.

You can add some red pepper flakes, carrots, or celery if you want to. These would add both color and crunch to the finished dish and if you are making this for the family it is always nice to give them extra vegetables. Pork is not an expensive meat to buy and this tasty stew recipe is a wonderful way to make the most out of the meat.

What you will need:

2 or 3 lbs boneless pork loin
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
3 minced cloves garlic
2 peeled, cored, sliced green apples
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon crumbled dried sage
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/4 cup all purpose flour
Salt

How to make it:

Trim the fat off the meat and cut the meat into one inch cubes. Combine the garlic, apples, onion, sage, pepper, and sugar in the crockpot. Coat the pork cubes with the flour and add these to the apple mixture.

Pour in the wine. If you want to add some chopped fresh vegetables, such as carrot or celery, add them now. Cover the crockpot and cook the pork stew for about eight hours on low.

Whisk the cornstarch into the cream. Turn the crockpot up to high and pour the cream mixture into the stew. Cook for 20 minutes. Season the stew and serve with cornbread or cornmeal biscuits.

Rice or mashed potatoes would also be a nice side dish and, if you are not adding some chopped vegetables to this, you can serve broccoli, green beans, or carrots on the side as well.

If you have ever made a crockpot beef stew you will already know that crockpot cooking is great for combining meat, vegetables and a sauce because this cooking method combines the ingredients so well. Pork stew is another of the best crockpot recipes to make if you want to satisfy and impress your family.

Slow Cooker - Crockpot Tips and Tricks

Slow Cooker Tips and Tricks

1. No peeking. That's right, do not lift open the lid. Precious moisture escapes and it takes a long time to make up for lifting the lid. No stirring either.

2.Vegetables on the bottom. If you are cooking anything with meat and veges, the vegetables go under the meat. Vegetables actually take longer to cook than the meat.

3. Brown your meat first. If you take the time to do this, it will make a huge difference in how things taste. The slow cooker can only do so much.

4. Do not add extra water. Yep, put the meat in the pot without water. It will be okay.

5. Use the cheapest cut of meat possible. You do not cook beef filets in a crockpot. Look for the words, chuck and shoulder. These are fairly cheap priced cuts of meat and they really will be fine to eat.

6. Take the time to trim off excess fats from meats.

7. Cut your veges so that they are all the same size. You want everything to finish at the same time.

8. If you have a removable stoneware pot, you can assemble everything the night before and place it in the fridge. In the morning, you can take your pot out of the fridge and simply place it in the base.

9. Too much fat on top of your soup or stew? Use a piece of bread and scoop it off.

10. Slow Cookers are great for summer time eating. Don't turn on the oven, a slow cooker will keep your kitchen cooler.

11. When your having a buffet table, use your crockpot to keep food warm. Keep rolls, hot dips, veges on the low setting. You can even use it to serve hot drinks, like cider.

12. Use your crockpot to revive stale crackers and potato chips. Place in the pot, no lid, turn on low for 2-4 hours until crispy.

13. Bake a potato - they taste so good when they are cooked all day. Wash the dirt off a white or sweet potato. Poke it with a fork a few times. Wrap in foil. They tend to darken and if you don't like that, rinse the potatoes in a mixture of 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon cream of tarter.

14. If the recipe calls for: Wine or Sherry you can use Beef or Chicken Broth and vice versa.

15. Cooking times - generally 1 hour on High equals 2 hours on Low

Try this recipe to get you started on your way to easy, delicious, slow cooker food.

Chili Nuts

Chili Nuts 1/4 cup melted butter 2 - 12 oz. cans of cocktail peanuts 1 packet - 1-5/8 oz. of chili seasoning mix Put the nuts in the slow cooker. Pour butter over top. Stir in chili seasoning mix. Put lid on and cook on Low for 2 - 2-1/2 hours. Stir. Turn slow cooker on High and cook another 10-15 minutes. Serve warm or cool.

Slow Cooking in a Crock Pot

In a Wal-Mart store, a short while ago, I was surprised to see boxes and boxes of crock pots of all sizes, prices, and descriptions stacked for sale - in men's wear yet!

Then I discovered that they were everywhere. Crock pot cooking is enjoying a comeback. In difficult times, the tried and true is revived.

High Heat Vs Slow Cooking

Cooking meat, using a hot stove top or oven requires the best, high quality cuts of meat in order to produce good results. Lower quality cuts are more likely to result in tough, stringy meals.

Cooking a roast on a lower heat setting for 6 to 12 hours allows you to take advantage of the cheaper cuts of meat. Roasts emerge moist and tender with all of the food values and flavours of the ingredients intact.

Follow the recipe you want to use, placing the veggies on the bottom of the pot, the meat on top of that, and let it do its own thing. You are done.

Most types of bacteria are killed at 140F degrees. Crock pots, by designed, operate at around 240F degrees on low setting, and 300F degrees on high. Crock pot cooking is safe.

It allows you to use the same low and slow method our forefathers used before electrical energy was available. They prepared a pit, building a bed of coals and buried a dutch oven to bubble away for a full day.

Today, you can prepare a wide range of meals in the crock pot, including cakes and desserts. Personally, I like to make my own bread because I can put my own selection of ingredients in the dough - raisins, nuts, fruit, etc, and I know that it is not chock full of trash that I don't need. Bulk food stores are amazing resources for ingredients.

I make a no knead bread recipe, using the crock pot liner as an oven utensil. The first time I put it in the oven at 450F degrees, I removed a very handsome loaf of bread. I also melted the plastic knob on the glass lid - so had to replace it with a wooden one. Just like a man, bumbling around.

Preparing a crock pot meal is very simple. Pick your recipe, load the crock pot according to instructions, calculate you start and stop times, crank it up and go. You can set it on high in the morning and come home to a steaming and delicious meal all ready to place on the table.

Being a senior citizen and a naturally lazy male, I often start the cooker in the late evening. It bubbles away all night and I awaken to my house filled with delicious aromas. I place the cooked food into containers, refrigerate, and I have my meals ready for the day. Simple, lip smackin' good. No fast food on the planet can match the flavour.

The tasty variations are particularly good because I choose to virtually eliminate salt from my diet and use herbs and spices as flavour enhancers instead.

Crock pot cooking is also a marvelous opportunity for family involvement. Loading the cooker is so easy that almost any child can get in there right up to the elbows and help. Good health, lots of giggles, and cementing family togetherness is great "stuff."

I have a small model, over 20 years old that still works just fine. Today, that same model sells for around $15.00. I bought the new, larger one, specifically to get the bigger capacity, and removable liner, to make my bread in the oven. It set me back $39.00.

A crock pot draws a very small current as compared to the kitchen range. It is the least expensive, most cost effective major appliance in my kitchen - about 5% of what I paid for the stove. As a senior citizen, that is important to me.

Now you really can shop in the perimeter aisles of the supermarket, where the more healthy and nutritious food lives. You can create serious family meals with the kinds of ingredients that all the health gurus insist you need for optimum health and weight management..

Try one, you'll like it, and you will recover the cost in a very short period of time by using the less expensive ingredients.

Tasty food, minimal effort, and easy on the budget. It just does not get a lot better than that these days.

Indian Crockpot Recipes to Warm You Up

There is an old cooking method, which used to be very popular in India. It is called "dum pukht," and this type of cooking uses a tightly covered clay pot over a fire. The heat inside the clay pot would turn to steam and cook the food. You can recreate this traditional Indian cooking method using a crockpot.

When you are making curry recipes, you will usually combine the sauce ingredients and then add the meat. The vegetables go on top. With crockpot cooking it is often unnecessary to combine all the ingredients together well, like you would do in a pot on the stove, because the densest ingredients should go on the bottom.

With Indian curry recipes the sauce becomes steam and this permeates all the other ingredients, cooking the meat and vegetables thoroughly and infusing everything with the aromatic flavors from the sauce.

Slow Cooked Indian Side Dishes

You can make side dishes in a crockpot, as well as curry recipes, such as curried mixed vegetables, Indian spiced green beans with tomatoes or a rice pilaf. Raw rice does not respond well to slow cooking because it goes mushy, so use par-boiled rice, add some seasonings and just finish it off in the slow cooker.

A lot of Indian style side dishes are probably easier to make on the stove while the main dish cooks in the crockpot. This includes sauteed vegetables, Indian style dips and sauces and various chutneys. You can buy poppadums or Indian bread and serve these on the side, for dipping into the curry.

Recipe for Crockpot Indian Curry with Sweet Potatoes

This is a really flavorful Indian curry recipe with sweet potato, beans, eggplant, chicken and more. If you can only find light coconut milk, add some heavy cream to the curry at the end of the cooking time to thicken it up a bit.

Serve this Indian slow cooked curry with rice or with warmed Indian style naan bread or chapattis for a hearty and warming dinner. This recipe serves six people.

What you will need:

1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 can garbanzo beans
1 chopped yellow onion
1 teaspoon ground cumin
13 1/2 oz can coconut milk
1/2 eggplant
1/2 inch grated fresh ginger
Few drops Tabasco sauce
1 peeled sweet potato
1 green bell pepper
3 cloves garlic
5 skinless, boneless chicken thighs
2 tablespoons curry powder

How to make it:

Drain and rinse the garbanzo beans. Chop the sweet potato, garlic, eggplant and bell pepper. Stir the coconut milk, Tabasco sauce, coriander, tomato paste, cumin, coconut milk, ginger, garlic and curry powder together in the crockpot, until the mixture is well combined.

Add the chicken and toss it a few times until it is coated. Pour in the rinsed beans. Sprinkle the chopped vegetables over the chicken and cover the crockpot. Cook for 5 hours on high or 8 hours on low. Stir carefully, so as not to break the pieces of sweet potato, and serve with rice.

If you want to make some exciting international crockpot recipes, you will be pleased to know that you can make the most wonderful Indian curries using this cooking method. There are crockpot recipes for all kinds of curries and spicy dishes and the slow cooking process brings out the amazing flavors really well.

How to Make Baby Food in a Crockpot

Commercial baby food seems to be the baby food of choice but it contains various preservatives and costs more than the homemade equivalent. If you have a slow cooker and a blender, you can make your own. Buy good quality ingredients for making baby purees, especially if you are going to freeze them.

A lot of people make crockpot recipes regularly but still buy canned products for their baby. However, homemade recipes beat store-bought food hands-down every time, whether that is baby food or food for the grownups.

If you have never thought about using the slow cooker to make purees for your little one, it is a great time to start experimenting. All you need is a slow cooker, some vegetables, some water, and a blender. You can use any vegetables you like and frozen ones work as well as fresh ones. You will already know which vegetables your baby seems to prefer.

Easy Carrot Puree

Most babies like carrots and you can get organic ones. This is a good recipe to make a lot of, because it freezes well and slow cooks well too. Wash your carrots and peel them to remove the skin as well as any traces of pesticide residue and bacteria, which might be lurking on it.

Put the peeled carrots in your slow cooker and add enough water to come halfway up them. Cook on high for three or four hours, or until you can pierce the biggest carrot with a fork.

Process them in a food processor or blender and do not worry if you get some of the water in with them. When then blender is three quarters full with carrots, add some of the cooking water and process them until the texture is smooth.

For older babies, you might want a chunkier consistency. This mixture will keep in the refrigerator for a couple of days or you can freeze it in tightly sealed, freezer-safe containers. Thaw the carrot puree by holding the container under warm running water or leave one in the refrigerator overnight.

Other Vegetable Baby Foods

You can make baby purees with other vegetables too. For a change to the carrot puree, wash some sweet potatoes and yellow squash. Cut them into chunks and add them to the crockpot with some frozen green beans.

Frozen vegetables are quite healthy because they are picked at the optimum time of ripeness and the nutrients are preserved when they are flash frozen. Add enough water to come halfway up the vegetables and cook on high for two or three hours, or until everything is tender.

You can blend the puree with an immersion blender, a food processor, or a conventional blender. You might need to add some water and, if so, add it gradually so you do not accidentally add too much. You can freeze the resulting puree in ice cube trays. When the cubes are set, you can empty them into freezer bags. Alternatively, use tightly sealed, freezer-safe plastic containers.

Crockpots are really handy and you can make great baby food in there. For the rest of the family, you can choose any one of the best crockpot recipes to make a wonderful dinner. You will find that crockpot recipes are simple to cook and taste amazing.

Some Basic Slow Cooker Food Safety Tips

Slow cooker recipes are wonderful because you can make the most delicious and easy meals in a crockpot. However, you might wondering about food safety. If you have been unlucky enough to experience food poisoning from undercooked meat or fish, you might be doubtful about the relatively low cooking temperatures a crockpot uses.

It is a good idea to invest in a food thermometer. Food should be hotter than 165 degrees F in order for it to be safe to eat. If you have been out all day and you left the crockpot on, you do not know whether there was a power cut which would have affected your crockpot dinner.

How a Slow Cooker Works

The cooker must cook food at a high enough temperature to make it safe to eat while keeping the temperature low enough so you can leave the machine unattended all day. The low setting on a crockpot is around 200 degrees F and the high setting is around 300 degrees F. This means the food will be between 170 and 280 degrees F as it cooks. Cooking food on such a low heat means that the flavors blend gently while cheap, tough cuts of meat soften and become really tender.

The steam released by the act of slow cooking, the long cooking process itself and the direct heat released in the crockpot all work together to make slow cooking a safe food cooking method, destroying bacteria and heating your food up sufficiently. It is also important to keep your work area and utensils clean, as well as the slow cooker itself.

Tips for Safe Slow Cooker Recipes

Keep cold ingredients refrigerated until it is time to add them to the slow cooker and handle them correctly. A lot of food safety involves using common sense and you will already know about how to handle foods like chicken and fish, and how to avoid cross contamination by using different cutting boards and utensils for fish, meat and vegetables.

You should thaw chicken or meat before adding it to the slow cooker. Do this overnight in the refrigerator for the best results. Choose high moisture content slow cooker recipes, like sauces, soup or chili in order to distribute the heat in the crockpot best. Turn the slow cooker up to the highest setting for the first hour, and then turn it down to finish cooking your dish.

When making slow cooker recipes you might want to cut food into small pieces, one inch chunks for example, to encourage thorough cooking. This is especially important with meat and a crockpot is not suitable for cooking a whole chicken, for example, since the inside might not reach a high enough temperature to stop bacteria from reproducing and this can lead to food poisoning.

You can use a crockpot to keep soups and dip recipes warm but if you switch off the heat and use it to keep meat, poultry or fish warm, you are taking a risk because a lukewarm temperature encourages bacteria to multiple.

If you are not going to eat your cooked food right away, transfer it to another container and refrigerate or freeze it. Do not use a crockpot to reheat food. Use the microwave, oven or stove for this job.

As easy as slow cooker recipes tend to be, it is always worthwhile learning a few slow cooker safety tips, in order to make your meals safe to eat as well as delicious. Most food safety tips are just about using your common sense but crockpot safety is important, especially in regard to making sure your food is sufficiently heated through.

You do not need to check it continuously Every time you open the cooker lid, you prolong the cooking time by 25 minutes.

Once you finish supper, then the cleaning is very easy, specially if you have a unit with a removable dish. Do not ever submerge the heating unit. As you can see cooking in the crock pot is so easy that even your husband could do it.

Pumpkin is a great ingredient to cook in a crockpot because it is naturally sweet and juicy, and crockpot cooking makes it even more so.

Types of Slow Cooked Pumpkin Soup Recipes

You can make spicy crockpot pumpkin soup, sweet crockpot pumpkin soup or another type. Pumpkin is so versatile that you can use it equally well in sweet or savory recipes. There are not many other vegetables you could say that about.

This soup does not have to be defined as sweet or savory and you can have sweet-flavored, savory pumpkin soup, combining ingredients like potato, onion, sugar, cream, and cinnamon. That combination would not work in many other recipes but pumpkin binds the savory ingredients with the sweet ones perfectly.

Recipe for Crockpot Curried Pumpkin Soup

This delicious pumpkin soup recipe can be served as it is, or used as a sauce for chicken, pork or another type of meat. There are spices in this pumpkin soup but the soup comes out very mild flavored, rather than fiery hot.

Garnish the soup with grated cheddar cheese and toasted cashew nuts for a really delicious taste and texture. This canned pumpkin soup recipe is suitable for beginner cooks, because it is so simple, and it makes a great lunch, dinner, or appetizer. This recipe makes enough for six servings.

Fast Crock Pot Recipes! Easy to Make and Never Boring Crock Pot Chicken Recipes!

Tired of the same old crockpot recipes? I'm going to give you 2 that are different, so easy and delicious! What's worse than the same old chicken, carrots and potatoes? That's a good meal, but you get tired of it quickly. So here are a couple that are a little bit different. There are 2 things you need to remember when it comes to crock pot cooking.

1. Don't put frozen meat in the crock pot. Slow cookers bring up the temperature of meat slowly. That's the point isn't it? But if meat doesn't reach 140 degrees within 4 hours, you run the risk of developing bacteria in your food. We don't want this, so no frozen meat. No matter what other recipes say.

2. All crock pots cook differently. Timing will vary for each one. However, you must be absolutely sure that your crock pot brings food up to 140 degrees when on LOW. If it doesn't, you need a new one. So, get a meat thermometer and test it.

Now here are those recipes - 2 of my family's favorites.

Crock Pot Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo

1 1⁄2 pounds chicken breast or tenders
2 packages (8 ounces each) white mushrooms, cut into thirds
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper
1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, cut into chunks
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, cut into pieces
1 1⁄2 cups grated Parmesan cheese, plus additional for garnish
1 1⁄2 cups whole milk 1 package (1 pound) fettuccine Spray bottom of slow cooker with cooking spray and arrange chicken in a single layer. Sprinkle chicken with salt, pepper and paprika. Top with mushrooms. In medium sauce pan over medium heat, stir together remaining ingredients, except for the pasta. Stir constantly. Heat through and pour over chicken. Cook on LOW 6-8 hours or HIGH 4-5 hours. You can add broccoli to crock pot about 2 hours before serving. Serve over hot fettuccini.

Crock Pot Merlot Chicken

2 1/2 to 3 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken pieces 12 oz sliced fresh mushroom, your choice 1 large onion, chopped 2 tsp minced garlic or 2 cloves minced 3/4 cup chicken broth, low sodium 1 6oz tomato paste 1/4 cup Merlot or any dry red wine ( if you absolutely won't use red wine substitute chicken broth) 2 Tbsp quick cooking tapioca 2 Tbsp chopped fresh basil or 1 1/2 t. dried basil 2 tsp sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 t. black pepper 2 cups cooked noodles 2 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese, preferably Parmigiano-Reggiano

Place the mushrooms, onion and garlic in slow cooker. Place washed chicken pieces on top. Combine broth, tomato paste, wine, tapioca, dried basil (if using), sugar, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Pour mixture over the chicken and cook on Low for 7 to 8 hours or on High for 4-5 hours. If you are using fresh basil, stir it in after the chicken is cooked, shortly before serving. To serve, spoon chicken mixture over cooked noodles. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Serve with a salad and you're done.

Crockpot Recipes For Your Fire Pit

It's late fall and the crisp air fills your mind with thoughts of vibrant colored leaves gently floating to the ground and the faint smell of wood smoke floating through the air. You start craving comforting foods, hearty soups and wrapping up in your favorite sweater. There is no better time to take a break and enjoy gathering around the fire pit in the back yard, sitting with your family and friends, and enjoying the clean, fresh air, a satisfying dinner, and a welcoming fire.

With everyone's busy lifestyle lately, it seems hard to fit in such a comforting, relaxing moment into your schedule; but really it's not. For any cook of any ability or style, the crock pot can be a great way to cut your time in the kitchen and extend your time with family and friends; put something in the crock pot before you leave for work in the morning and by that evening when you get home, dinner is waiting for you.

It doesn't take much time at all to make a great meal in a one of these little miracles of the kitchen. Most recipes are so simple they require very few ingredients and no time at all to start enjoying. For instance, before leaving the house for the day, try placing a three to four pound beef roast in the crock pot with a 12 ounce can of your favorite dark soda and an envelope of dry onion soup mix. Add a couple of your favorite spices like pepper or garlic, turn the crock pot on low, and by the time your gathering starts around the fire pit in the back yard, you have dinner ready to go for pulled meat sandwiches. Add some chips and pick up some deli-style potato salad for sides and no fuss, no muss, all enjoyment. Don't forget to top off the evening with a round of S'mores!

Not only are crock pots a great way to make dinners, but desserts are also a wonderful way to utilize them. Everything from cobblers to bread puddings and cakes; yes, even a cake! And it doesn't stop there, either. Once you get the basics of crock pot cooking down, anything is possible; appetizers, dips, stews, roast chicken, desserts, it's all possible with just a little preparation and planning, leaving you more worry free time to spend with the ones you love.

How to Make Desserts in a Crockpot

Perhaps you associate crockpot cooking with stews, casseroles and soups but these handy kitchen appliances are way more versatile than that. Did you know that a slow cooker is a big help if you are making appetizers or great for making delicious desserts?

You can make all kinds of desserts in a crockpot actually. If you have a slow cooker which you do not use much, why not try making some sweet treats in it. Maybe you never thought about making dessert recipes in your crock pot but they come out so nicely.

Some of the Best Slow Cooker Desserts

Puddings, fruit recipes and even cheesecake recipes are a breeze if you have a slow cooker and easy crockpot recipes for desserts are not difficult to find either.

If you are a fan of baked apples you can make this delicious dish in your slow cooker. Add raisins, cinnamon and butter to some apples and arrange them in the crockpot in warm water. The apples slowly poach and the result is incredibly soft and tender apples with a richly flavored filling.

You can make cakes in there too, using brownie mix or cake mix. Spread the batter in the crockpot and cook it slowly for a couple of hours.

Recipes like these are great when you are busy making entrees with the stove or oven because once you have mixed the ingredients together and added them to the crock pot you can forget about dessert until it is done.

Making Cheesecake in a Slow Cooker

You can even make cheesecake recipes in a crockpot. Usually the recipe will tell you to use a rack or a ring of aluminum foil to keep the crust off the base of the slow cooker. Most crockpot cheesecake recipes only take a couple of hours to cook and you can switch the machine off and let the cheesecake slowly cool down, before garnishing it with chocolate, fruit, jello, nuts or whichever topping you like.

Sometimes when you bake a cheesecake in the oven the sudden switch from room temperature to heat and back to room temperature can cause the cheesecake filling to crack and split. This is avoided when using the gentle heat of a slow cooker and allowing the cheesecake to slowly cool down in there. Cooking cheesecake recipes this way is great.

More Crockpot Dessert Ideas

Another easy recipe is baked custard. Combine sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla and any flavorings you like and cook it slowly for two or three hours. Baked custard is really tasty and it comes out really nicely in a crock pot.

You can stew fruit in a slow cooker. Try prunes with sugar, water and citrus peel or a combination of apples and pears. Stewed fruit is healthy and you can enjoy it with yogurt or ice cream. Sprinkle some chopped nuts over the top and you will have a filling and very tasty dessert. There are bread pudding, rice pudding and cobbler recipes you can try and lots more besides. The crockpot is an ideal cooking method for more than just savory dishes and most of the recipes are really easy to follow.

A slow cooker is perfect for making dessert recipes as well as savory meals. There are lots of different crockpot recipes to choose from, whether you want to make appetizers, hearty traditional meals for your family or even some easy dessert recipes. Slow cooker recipes are both a time saver and easy to make, the perfect mix for busy cooks

Three Crockpot Chicken Recipes

My crockpot gets quite a bit of use. In the winter, it's wonderful to have a hot meal ready after we all get home in the evening. And in the summer, it's great to not have the oven going during the hot days. I'd like to share some of our favorite chicken crockpot recipes with you:

Chicken and Veggies in the Crockpot

4-6 pieces of chicken
16 ounces of frozen veggies
1 can cream of celery soup
8 ounces of shredded cheese

There are many combinations for this recipe. If you're using chicken breasts, use 3-4 of them. If you use thighs, use 4-6 of them. When I buy the frozen veggies, I look for the combination pack of broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. You can also use artichoke hearts or asparagus. It really depends on the flavors you want. If you prefer fresh veggies, chop up celery, carrots, onion, broccoli, cauliflower and even onions.

I'm not a mushroom fan, so I don't use cream of mushroom. Play around with the many cream soups. Try cream of celery or cream of broccoli or any other family favorite. When it comes to the cheese, I try to use a combination of cheddar and Monterey jack. I think this provides a wonderful taste. Other people really like the taste of swiss cheese or Italian blend cheese.

Place the chicken in the crockpot. Mix together the remaining ingredients and pour over chicken. Cook on low five to six hours. For a great finish, place a bit more cheese on top ten minutes before serving. Our other favorite crockpot chicken recipe is chicken and stuffing:

1 box of stuffing mix
4 -6 pieces of chicken
2 cans cream of chicken soup

Follow the package directions on the stuffing mix to moisten. Instead of putting the stuffing into a casserole dish, spread it into your crockpot. Place the chicken on top of the stuffing. Now pour the soup on top. Depending on the size of your crockpot, one can of soup might be enough. If you do use two cans of soup, consider using one can cream of chicken soup and one can cream of broccoli soup.

Cook six to eight hours on low.

The last recipe I'd like to share with you is chicken and fruit. I call it chicken and fruit because you can use whatever fruits you like:

4-6 pieces of chicken
1 can of fruit
1 onion, quartered
Plain chicken broth (optional)

We have tried this with peaches, with apricots and with pineapple. Each recipe came out great. Place the chicken in the bottom of the crockpot. Put the onions around the chicken. Place the fruit on top along with the liquid from the fruit. If you do not have enough liquid from the fruit add in plain chicken broth until you have the correct amount of liquid. Cook on low six to eight hours. I hope your family enjoys these dishes as much as my family does.

Slow Cooker Pork Roast and Pork Barbecue Recipes

Pork roast is easy to cook in a slow cooker or crock pot. It stays moist and tender, and has a delicious flavor. You don't have to buy the best cuts when you plan to cook pork in a slow cooker or crock pot. You can purchase cheaper cuts and still get a very good result.

One of the best things about cooking pork in a slow cooker is that you can let it cook while you are away from home. The low heat does all the work for you. Here are 2 slow cooker pork recipes for you to try in your own kitchen.

Pork Roast

4-5 pounds pork roast
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Coat inside of slow cooker or crock pot with vegetable oil. Set cooker on LOW setting and allow to warm.

Mix paprika, chili powder, pepper and salt together to make a rub. Rub both sides of roast well with spices. Place roast in preheated cooker and cover.

Cook on LOW setting for approximately 5 to 6 hours, or on HIGH setting for 3 to 4 hours. Roast is done when tender and no longer pink in the center.

Pork Barbecue

3-4 pounds pork roast
2 cups diced tomatoes
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons black pepper
1 teaspoon salt

Mix all ingredients together in slow cooker or crock pot. Place roast in cooker, being sure both sides of roast are coated with mixture. Cover.

Cook on LOW setting for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for 5 to 6 hours. When done, roast will be tender and ready to fall apart. Remove from cooker and shred pork before serving.

Tip: The pork barbecue recipe doubles well for taking large amounts of BBQ to social functions.
