Clever Cooking - How to Make a Crockpot Appetizer and Entree in One

This is a very clever crockpot recipe because it makes both an appetizer and an entree. If you are looking for easy dishes to make in your slow cooker, you will love this one because you simply add everything to the crockpot and let it cook for eight to ten hours.

Preparation is minimal and you just have to quarter or halve most of the vegetables, roughly chop a whole chicken and add everything to the slow cooker. Put the lid on and that is all you need to do until you get home.

After the eight to ten hours have passed, you will have a delicious beef and chicken flavored broth and also an entree with tender vegetables. Your kitchen will also smell amazing. If you are going to have guests coming to dinner but you need to be out all day working, this recipe is the perfect solution because all you need to worry about is dessert. When you get home, the appetizer and entree will be ready!

You can buy a readymade dessert or serve something simple like a platter of cheeses, crackers, and fresh fruit. Even a couple of scoops of sorbet or ice cream will be a welcome dessert after such a tasty meal.

Crockpot cooking is really popular. Not only does it allow you to make mouthwatering meals without being physically present but the flavors blend so nicely and the slow cooking makes the beef so tender and juicy.

Your guests will think you have been working over a hot stove for hours because the results of this tasty appetizer and entree recipe are so delicious. This recipe makes enough to serve ten people so you can halve it if you only have a few guests coming over. Alternatively, it will freeze well so you might want to make the whole amount and then freeze whatever you do not eat.

What you will need:

1 beef shank or beef soup bone, with meat on
1 bay leaf
2 1/2 lbs rump roast
3 quartered turnips
1 teaspoon thyme
2 sprigs parsley
2 onions with 2 cloves stuck in each
White part from 3 leeks
3 1/2 lbs chopped chicken
6 halved carrots
3 quarts water
Giblets from chicken
3 halved celery ribs
Salt and black pepper, to taste
How to make it:

Add all the ingredients to your slow cooker and cook it for eight to ten hours on "low." Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Put the chicken, beef, and giblets on a platter and spoon the vegetables around the outside. Keep this warm in the oven.

Strain the broth and skim off the fat. Serve the broth as an appetizer and the meat and vegetables as an entree. Before you serve the entree, slice the chicken and meat and serve horseradish and pickles on the side, as well as French bread and butter.

Soup recipes can be make in the crockpot or on the stove. Pumpkin soup is always a welcome choice because it is so versatile. You can choose from a sweet, creamy pumpkin soup, an easy canned pumpkin soup recipe and many more variations besides.
