Crock Pot - Old Fashioned Beef Stew Recipe

During the fall and winter months, I enjoy making hearty soups and stews in my crock pot for my family. I love the fact that I can spend a few minutes in the morning preparing it, put it into the slow cooker and walk away...a few hours later, our dinner is hot and ready to enjoy.

The following recipe was given to me by my 83 year old great aunt about 25 years ago. To this day, I still enjoy making it for my family. If you don't like okra, you can certainly omit it from the recipe. At times, I have actually substituted the okra with some fresh green beans or green peas, and the stew was just as delicious.

Crockpot

Old-Fashioned Beef Stew Recipe

2 lbs. beef cubes

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 bay leaf

1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 onion, finely chopped

1 cup beef bouillon

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 teaspoons table salt

2 teaspoons granulated sugar

4 carrots, peeled and sliced in 1" sections

1 cup celery, chopped

4 potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes

4 medium-sized turnips, peeled and quartered

4 1/2 cups water

1 cup partially cooked okra

In a large frying pan, heat up the vegetable oil over medium heat. Brown beef cubes on all sides.

In your crock pot combine the browned beef cubes, bay leaf, Worcestershire sauce, onion, bouillon, pepper, salt, granulated sugar and the vegetables listed in the recipe. Pour in 4 1/2 cups of water and stir so that everything is combined.

Cover and set the dial to high heat and slow cook for 6 hours. Remove lid and stir in flour if it is needed to thicken the soup. Replace lid and turn the dial to low heat and simmer for 1-2 additional hours.

This recipe will make 6 hearty servings.

Crockpot Cooking - How to Make Chicken Noodle Soup

Did you know that your humble crockpot could make a delicious pot of soup? While you are off at work or running errands, your soup will be simmering merrily, creating a delicious concoction of goodness. It does not matter if you are accomplished in the kitchen or if you only cook when absolutely necessary... you can make a wonderful chicken noodle soup in your crockpot that will be a vast improvement over canned soup.

If You Use Only the Freshest Ingredients...

If you only use the freshest ingredients, the crockpot can still make your soup easier. Remove the skin from your chicken. You can use a whole chicken, parts or boneless breasts or thighs... whichever you have handy. Put the chicken in the crockpot with enough water to cover it. You can add a stalk of celery, an onion, a carrot, and some herbs if you wish. Let it simmer on high for three to four hours.

Once your chicken is thoroughly cooked, take it out and cool it. Strain out the vegetables you have added and put them in your compost bin. Once your meat is cooled, debone it and cut the pieces into bite-size bits before replacing it in the crockpot. Chop up some fresh vegetables. Carrots, celery, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, and many others make excellent choices. Add some garlic and fresh herbs.

Keeping the crockpot on high let it cook for a couple more hours. Do not open the lid until it is time to add your noodles. Taste the broth about 45 minutes before you want to serve the soup. Add salt and other seasonings as needed. Add your noodles. This can be egg noodles, linguine, fettuccine, or any other noodle you prefer. Perhaps you have made homemade noodles to add... if so, they only need to cook about 20 minutes until they are tender.

Super Simple Chicken Noodle Soup

If you want to make soup extremely easy, try this tried and true method. This homemade chicken noodle soup is so easy a rank amateur could make it. If you have leftover chicken in the fridge, you can use that in your soup, or you can pick up one of those rotisserie chickens at the market.

Put the chicken in the crockpot, bones, and all. Cover with a large can of chicken broth. Simmer the soup on high for three or four hours. This will add the chicken's flavor to the commercial broth. Remove the chicken and let it cool before deboning it. Cut up the meat before putting it back in the crockpot.

Add some vegetables. You can use fresh sliced carrots or other vegetables, or you can use frozen vegetables. To make it really easy, just put in some whole baby carrots from the market. No peeling, slicing or dicing! Let the soup cook for a couple more hours.

About 30 to 45 minutes before serving, add the noodles of your choice. Perhaps you like the frilly egg noodles, or maybe some ramen noodles. Maybe all you have in the cupboard is a box of old lasagna noodles. If so, just break them into smaller pieces and put them in the soup.

Everyone loves chicken noodle soup. It helps us feel better when we're sick, or just feeling blue. For more inspiration, check out http://www.ChickenNoodleSoups.com for recipes, cooking tips and fun facts about everyone's favorite soup. All American 921 All-American 21-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner

After discovering that once market pressure cooker gaskets are a waste of cash, i made a decision to speculate within the All yankee 921 twenty one 1/2 Qt Pressure Cooker/Canner. No a lot of replacing gaskets that do not even last however 3-4 uses. to a small degree olive oil round the joining edges, and it seals fantastically -- even the primary time. This unit cleans up terribly simply, though it's alittle significant. It comes with a pair of racks whereas the unit it replaced solely came with one. i favor the peak of this cooker as a result of I will place meat and onions within the bottom and place a steamer basket full of potatoes on prime of them. i do not even place this dangerous boy away as a result of i am perpetually using it. there's the canning from the garden, however there simply does not appear to be any finish to the meals you'll prepare. My favorite cookbook (Miss Vickie's huge Book of Pressure Cooker Recipes) and my All yankee 921 create it doable on behalf of me to place out really smart, healthy meals and still be able to relish my evenings once operating outside the house all day. A pressure-cooked meal tastes such a lot higher than something that has been in a very crockpot for ten hours, believe me!
I've solely shopped at Amazon.com once, however the service was glorious. Delivery was on the day they projected, and also the packaging was excellent. the value I paid through Amazon.com was but had I ordered straight from All yankee.
My order qualified at no cost shipping, that i actually appreciated since this item is pretty hefty. All in all, I feel I've created a awfully smart investment in shopping for this pressure cooker/canner, and its quality is thus smart that i do know it'll be around long once i am gone.

Pasta to the Rescue

If there is one dish that has earned for itself a reputation as a universal favorite, it would definitely be pasta. Pasts can be cooked up a myriad different ways and is the best food around that can cater to a wide range of tastes. It can be served as a salad, a main dish and even as dessert! The possibilities are endless, as are the ingredients that you can use to accompany the pasta.

Because of this, pasta can be the ultimate dish-to-the-rescue for quick-fix meals. It is a quick lifesaver when you have surprise guests or when your teenager decides to hold an impromptu dinner or slumber party with his friends. Pasta is the easiest dish to prepare in times when you feel you are too worn out to do any kind of serious, complicated cooking.

Preparing a pasta dish is certainly a better alternative to ordering takeout or eating out, since the best way towards healthy eating and living is to always try to prepare your meals yourself.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Always have pasta in your pantry. When you have the time to do the shopping and the cooking, it is best to stock up. Pasta comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors and because it can be stored for long periods of time, it is best to buy and stock several different varieties. You can choose from fettuccine, tagliatelle, bucatini, farfalle, fusilli, route or sphagetti. Just drop these in a pot of boiling water and you have pasta ready in minutes. With different shapes and textures, you can always make each dish look unique and appetizing. It would always seem that you did a lot of work when in reality; you only prepared the dish in minutes.

For emergencies, you can store different sauces in the freezer. On a day when you find yourself with no other pressing chores, spend some time in the kitchen preparing batches of different types of pasta sauces. Whether you choose a marinara sauce or any other variety, you can store these in clearly labeled containers in your freezer. When you are ready to use it, it can be easily thawed in the microwave or on the stove until it begins to boil, which will only take minutes. You can do this while you are boiling the pasta and when you are ready to eat, your pasta and its accompanying will be ready to be tucked into.

Bringing out the Crock Pot

If you rarely have the time to work in the kitchen, using a Crock Pot will be a good way to stock up on sauces for your pasta dishes. Since the Crock Pot is closed and cooks using low temperatures, it is safe to just leave it unattended as it cooks, allowing you to go about your work day worry-free while still getting the cooking done.

Even lasagna is a breeze with the crock pot. Sautee the meat, onion and garlic and cook the cheese sauce. Layer the meat, cheese, sauce and pasta in the crock pot and leave to cook for 4-6 hours. Then go about doing whatever you want. At the end of 6 hours, you have lasagna for an immediate meal plus plenty more that you can store for emergencies.

What is great about pasta sauces is that they only get better in time. You will always be the gourmet cook with the flavorful meals - all prepared with ease. Just don't let anyone in on your little secret.

What You Need to Know About Crock Pot Pasta

Delicious pasta dishes are only a crock pot away. While it is true that pasta can be a bit tricky in the crock pot, with a little knowledge you will soon be turning out perfect pasta. There are several ways you can do pasta when you use the crock pot, and it all depends on what recipe you decide to make.

Cooking Pasta as a Separately

Crockpot

In some recipes, it is recommended to cook your pasta completely before adding it to your recipe. Alternatively, your crock pot contents might be served on a bed of noodles. You may find this works well with stroganoff, roasted meats with sauces, and other similar recipes.

Other recipes may require that the pasta be partially cooked until it is just tender. The pasta is then added to the crock pot for the last half hour to cook with the rest of the ingredients. This approach works well with chicken Alfredo, casseroles, some soups and other dishes. The noodles will finish their cooking in the crock pot and soak up some of the flavors while they are at it.

Making the pasta separately is more work than just using the crock pot. However, taking the time to boil your water and cook the pasta just right gives you perfect noodles when you need them. This technique is not appropriate for all recipes, however.

All in the Pot Together

Some recipes that you find for the crock pot call for uncooked pasta. They mean less work for you, though in most cases the pasta is still added in towards the end. This technique works well for homemade chicken noodle soup, ramen or goulash. Standard types of pasta should be added to your crock pot about half an hour to an hour before serving. If you are making a ramen soup, the thin noodles only take about 10 to 15 minutes to cook if your crock pot is on the high setting.

Some recipes require you put the pasta in at the beginning, with the other ingredients. Lasagna is one example. You can also make an incredible macaroni and cheese in the slow cooker, but do not leave it for eight hours. This is a recipe that will be done somewhere between 90 minutes and 2 hours. You can also make baked ziti, stuffed pasta shells, and other similar dishes. Be sure to watch the time on these dishes. They probably will not take all day to cook, and you do not want to end up with mush instead of pasta.

Pasta does just fine in the crock pot. All you need to do for success is to use the right approach for each recipe. Pasta is more delicate than something like beans, so keep an eye on the cooker until you know how the recipe will work. Sometimes it may take a few times to get it right.

With a little practice, you will be making wonderful pasta for your family with your handy crock pot. You will be enjoying comforting, hot pasta that tastes terrific and your family will love.

There is More Than One Way to Prepare the Perfect Swiss Steak

There is more than one way to prepare a Swiss steak.

More than likely your recipe will call for either round or chuck steak, but you can also use cube steak.

The type of steak you use is entirely up to your palate. Swiss steak can also be either baked in the oven, cooked in a slow cooker or Crockpot, or even cooked in a large skillet on top of the stove.

You will not find many recipes that tell you how you to cook Swiss steak on top of the stove, but it can be done.

If you decide to try to prepare one on your stove top use any of the recipes that you find, just cook on the stove top and check often.

These Swiss steak recipes call for them to be baked in the oven, but you can also prepare them in the above mentioned ways.

For the first recipe you will need the following ingredients:

a covered baking dish,

2 pounds of steak,

salt, pepper,

garlic powder,

1 onion sliced,

4 ounce can of drained mushrooms, and

1 15 ounce can of tomato sauce.

The first step is to cut your steak into serving sizes, season the steaks with the salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Place the steak into a baking dish top with the onion slice.

Now, pour the mushrooms and tomato sauce on top. Kind of level the ingredients and bake covered for 1 ½ hours at 350 degrees. This recipe can also be prepared on top of the stove just as easy. Just remember to check on it and be sure that the liquid is not evaporating.

You can always add just a bit more tomato sauce or even a small amount of water if needed.

If you like your Swiss Steak a bit spicier, try this one. You will need:

round or chuck steak, (tenderize the steak first),

15 ounce can of tomato sauce,

1 large onion sliced,

2 tablespoons of vinegar, and

8 ounces of your favorite picante sauce or salsa.

Place the steak in the baking dish, add the onion on top and then pour in the remainder of the ingredients. Bake at 250 degrees for around 20 minutes.

Crockpot Cooking and Your Family Budget - Surprising Ways This Appliance Saves You Money

If, like me, you bought a crockpot some years ago, used it for a while, then stuck it away, it's time to retrieve it. Your crockpot is the perfect appliance to put to work in the kitchen to save you money on your grocery budget. Clear a spot on your kitchen counter and let's put that crockpot to work!

But, first, consider the condition of your crockpot. If you have forgotten exactly when you bought your crockpot, or it has a pattern or color that's reminiscent of decades past, you should buy a new one. You will be saving money when you spend money because you'll have a more energy efficient model. Let's look at the other ways that using your crockpot will save you money:

Crockpot

Small Appliance Equals Small Wattage

Certain dishes, like beef stew, pot roasts, and soups, are usually cooked for a pretty long period of time. If you're using your oven for, say 3 hours, that's about 10 kWh for that meal. Cooking the same pot roast in a crockpot for, say 6 hours, will take about 1.2 kWh. That's simply based on your oven wattage of roughly 2500 versus your crockpot wattage of roughly 200. It just makes sense using a smaller appliance for such a long cooking period. Check out your appliance wattage and energy consumption using any of the energy consumption calculators online and see if you don't agree.

Budget Cuts Of Meat Are Perfect

It's time to try some of those budget cuts of meat again. This time, when you cook them in your crockpot instead of the oven, the meat will fall right off the bone and you can cut it with a fork. The sinew and tissue breaks down nicely when cooked with a low, slow method of the crockpot. Cooking the meat with some liquid added also adds to the tender results. An expensive, tender cut of meat won't cook as well in your crockpot. If you've been avoiding the less expensive cuts of meat, now is the time to try again. No more disasters, because they're not going in the oven.

No More Drive Thru Fast Food

Your family is rushing home from work and school, and there's nothing for dinner. You make a quick stop at the drive-thru, plunk down a huge pile of money and think "there's got to be a better plan." Well, there is. You work too hard for that money to throw it away on bad food. How about instead, you plan a meal, prepare it ahead of time and throw it in the crockpot in the morning? Now, you have time for the evening routine, without worrying about that anguished cry, "what's for dinner?" The fast food joints can get along just fine without your money.

Stop Stressing Your Air Conditioner

When the weather turns hot and steamy, you don't need to add any more heat to your house by cooking a meal. With the air conditioner running, it seems foolish to start heating your oven or stove top. Unfortunately, I can't live on salads all summer long. There comes a time when my family and I want a hot meal, even in the summer. Having the crockpot cooking away on the counter top doesn't heat up the kitchen, and we get a hearty meal, without stressing out our air conditioner.

Cook With Leftovers In Mind

Cooking once and eating twice is my motto. With a large crockpot full of chili, roast beef, or spaghetti, I have lunches for the next few days. Also, with large portions, I can put a couple servings in the freezer for nights when we need a meal in a hurry. Avoiding a quick stop at the grocery store always saves money; you'd be surprised how many items you buy on impulse. This simple method of cooking large portions can save any family a lot of money each month on the grocery budget.

Wake Up to the Smell of Breakfast

As we often hear health experts say, we need to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. However, for many busy individuals even the most basic breakfast is impossible, especially when one has to wake up at 4 am just to catch the early morning commute. Add that to preparing packed lunches for the kids and getting them ready for school and it almost always adds up to rush, rush mornings.

This is a scene that is replayed in most homes each weekday morning. Despite the fact that most people are guilty of rushing through breakfast or just missing it altogether, we could not deny the fact that breakfast is the most important meal for the day, especially for our kids. After a long period of fasting through the night, it is the nutrition that we get at breakfast that will get us through our day. So yes, we do have to eat like a King.

To address the need for nutrition at breakfast, we now have a wide choice of healthy breakfast meals to choose from. We have cereals of different flavors, instant oats, instant waffles, instant everything. Even eggs now come in tetra-packages, ready to be poured onto a hot skillet for instant scrambled eggs. But then again, we can only have so much cereal and instant foods before we grow tired of it.

Luckily, we now have the option to wake up to the smell of breakfast, with a breakfast fit for a King waiting for us in the kitchen. How? Crock Pot breakfasts! When you know you have absolutely no time to make anything in the morning and you feel like you just cannot have another bowl of cereal or instant oats the next day, it's time to take out your crock pot and whip up a breakfast casserole the night before. It will be warm, ready and waiting the moment you wake up.

Breakfast Suggestions

Southwest Crock Pot Breakfast- With your Crock Pot you could choose to have a Southwest-themed breakfast with peppers, chilies and cheese and a whole lot of sausage. A hearty and hot Southwest Crock Pot breakfast could be just what you need to pick you up in the morning.

Crock Pot Cobbler- Check out your fresh food section at the grocery or your favorite fruit market for the freshest fruits in season. Apples, peaches and pears make for great, warm, breakfast cobblers using your Crock Pot. You can use just one kind of fruit or mix it up! Combine fruit slices or chunks with granola and cinnamon, place in your crock pot and drizzle with a honey-butter mixture. The cobbler will cook through the night and will greet you with its sweet smell in the morning.

Making breakfast using a Crock Pot will actually be more than just a convenience for some. In areas where electric current charges are lower at night, Crock Pot cooking will also allow you to save up on costs.

So go ahead, eat breakfast like a king. There's nothing better to get you through the day.

Spicy Crock Pot Recipes - 2 Mexican Recipes For the Crock Pot

The crock pot is great for cooking authentic Mexican food recipes, especially spicy ones. This is because slow cooking brings out the flavors of every ingredient and makes meals taste incredible. When you are using chilies and strong flavored ingredients to make traditional Mexican foods, you will want the flavors to develop and combine, because the finished dish will taste amazing.

Why Make Mexican Food in the Crock Pot

Crockpot

Slow cookers are great for cooking nearly any type of cuisine and this kind of cooking is especially suited to Mexican dishes. There are some cuts of meat, which are used in Mexican cooking but are quite tough. Skirt steak is a good example. This is delicious as a taco filling or stew ingredient but it needs to be cooked slowly for a long time, making it ideal for the crockpot.

There are lots of Mexican dishes that you can make in the crockpot, including meatballs, chili con carne, Mexican casseroles, soups, and dips. If you plan to be out all day but you want to get home to a delicious dinner, a crockpot will make your life so much easier because you can add the ingredients in the morning, leave it to cook and get home to something, which is ready to serve.

One of Easiest Mexican Slow Cooker Recipes Ever

For a quick and easy Mexican supper, simply add half a pound of browned hamburger meat, two cans of mushrooms soup, a can of taco sauce, a can of spicy enchilada sauce and a drained, small can of chopped green chilies to your crock pot and warm the mixture through for a couple of hours. Serve with cheese-flavored Doritos or corn chips.

You can sprinkle some grated Mexican blend cheese or cheddar over it if you like. Since all the ingredients for this recipe are canned, except for the hamburger meat, you can stock up on the ingredients if you enjoy this dish and make it whenever you fancy. The longer you cook it for, the stronger the flavors become but the ingredients simply need to be heated through so a couple of hours on "high" is fine. If you are going out, cook it on "low" but give it twice the time.

How to Make Mexican Crockpot Pork Roast

Another great recipe is to cook a pork roast in the slow cooker on "low" for eight hours or until it is very tender. Transfer it to a glass baking dish. Combine two cups of the broth from the roast with a couple of tablespoons of chili powder, a tablespoon of flour and some salt and pepper. Pour this mixture over the pork roast and bake it at 350 degrees F for ten minutes.

This is a fantastic recipe and pork roast will be really tender and flavorful from the slow cooking. The chili powder livens it up. You can serve this crockpot pork roast with anything you want but it goes well with mashed potatoes or French fries. This is a great meal to cook if you will be out all day or very busy, because it cooks itself for eight hours and then you just have to bake it for ten minutes to crisp it up before serving it.

Spicy Crock Pot Recipes - 2 Mexican Recipes For the Crock Pot

There are plenty of Mexican recipes which are suitable for slow cooking and this cooking method really brings out the flavors of the ingredients. Easy Mexican recipes cooked in the crockpot taste amazing and are always popular. MexicanFoodRecipes.org When it has to be Real Authentic Mexican Food.

Crock Pot Recipe for Creamy Seafood Chowder

I see myself as a fairly good cook. I can make something without a recipe, create my own recipes, and alter any recipes I have to fit my family's tastes. However, for some reason I never ventured to create a "clam chowder" type recipe. This is truly strange considering every time I go to a restaurant and they offer clam chowder, I order it. I love clam or creamy seafood chowder, and often when I love a recipe I am anxious to try it. But again, for some reason I would shy away from trying this. Perhaps part of the fear came from creating the cream base or cooking with clams. I'm not really sure, but I finally overcame the fear by cheating.

I know that we always teach our children not to cheat, but I have to admit that cheating in cooking is sometimes a wonderful thing. By cheating with this recipe, I've created the seafood chowder I love without a lot of preparation and hassle (and added a few extra twists). Enjoy!

Crockpot

2 cans cream of chicken soup

2 cans cream of potato soup

1 tsp garlic powder

2 tbsp minced onion

1 cup half and half

1 cup milk

¼ tsp black pepper

1 cup celery

2 10 ounce cans of clam, undrained

1 tsp creole seasoning

4 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped

1 16 oz package frozen corn

1 pound pre-cooked tail off shrimp

Spray crock pot with cooking spray. Combine all ingredients except shrimp, mix well. Cover and cook on low 7-8 hours or high 3-4 hours. Add shrimp, cover and cook on high an additional 30-45 minutes until shrimp is tender.

Crockpot Cooking - How to Convert Recipes to the Crockpot

Have you ever been hungry for something special... maybe a roast or a ham, for example... and then figured out you just did not have time to cook it? Unless they have a specific recipe for the crockpot, most people never even think to use it. In reality, many recipes for the oven or kettle can be adapted to the crockpot with delicious results.

While crockpots may vary slightly, generally the low setting is about 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The high setting is approximately 300 degrees Fahrenheit. An hour of cooking on the high setting is equivalent to two - 2.5 hours on low. Many recipes that you find written for crockpots suggest your food should cook for 8 to 10 hours on low. This is about how long most people are gone to work or school.

Recipe Conversion Tips

If you are thinking of trying your favorite recipe in your crockpot for the first time, there is a little advice you may want to follow for the best results. When changing any recipe for the crockpot, you will want to reduce your liquid. The crockpot does not let liquid evaporate like the oven, so you will want to reduce the amount you initially put in by about half. You will be surprised how much liquid is there when your dish is done.

Adjust your spices. Ground spices tend to lose flavor with many hours of cooking, so wait to add them until the last hour before serving. Whole spices, on the other hand, tend to become intensified in the crockpot. Unless you want to be overwhelmed with the flavor of that spice, you may want to cut it back by half.

If you are planning to make a chicken soup recipe, or any other soup for that matter, add just enough liquid to cover the rest of the ingredients. You can always add more liquid later in the cooking process for a thinner soup. For cream soups, hold off on the dairy products until close to the end of your cooking time to keep them from curdling.

Dried beans work well in the crockpot. Instead of spending time soaking them, cook them on low overnight. Put your beans in the crockpot and cover with water. Be sure to add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water. In the morning, drain the water before adding your softened beans to the other ingredients. Chili, bean soup, and other delicious meals can then continue cooking in the crockpot.

Some foods are too delicate for cooking over long periods of time. Seafood, rice, pasta, some vegetables, and dairy products are just a few. Do not add any of these ingredients until a couple of hours before serving if you are cooking on low or one hour before serving if you are cooking on high. If you really must use milk earlier in the cooking period, consider using evaporated milk.

Browning of the meat is optional. If you choose to do so before putting the meat in the crockpot, it will add a beautiful color to the surface. It also helps reduce the fat content on some meats. If you do not have time for it however, browning is not necessary to have a delicious roast waiting when you come home in the crockpot.

Crockpots are not just for one-dish meals. If you are intrigued with using your crockpot, visit http://www.ChickenNoodleSoups.com for new chicken soup recipes to try while you are away from the house. It is so nice to come home to a fragrant, delicious meal already waiting for you. Nothing but chicken soups of all kinds. Crockpot Beef Stroganoff

Beef stroganoff is a Russian mixture of sauteed beef in a sour cream sauce. It dates back to the 1800s and is popular in many countries, including Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Lebanon, Iran, Europe and North America, although the exact ingredients tend to vary from place to place.

The name possibly came from a member of a big family, like Count Pavel Stroganov, a diplomat, or Alexander Grigorievich Stroganoff. The first known recipe for this dish involves lightly floured cubes of beef, bouillon, mustard, and sour cream.

Crockpot

There are no mushrooms or onions in the traditional dish and the beef is in cubes not strips. Tomato paste and onions feature in a 1912 version of stroganoff and this is served with potato straws, which are a traditional Russian side dish.

The recipe was popular in Chinese restaurants and hotels after Imperial Russia fell, before World War II. This recipe was introduced to the United States by Chinese and Russian immigrants, and also US servicemen in China. This is probably why beef stroganoff was so popular in the 1950s. Next, the recipe made its way to Hong Kong and from there to the UK, Australia and other countries.

Modern Stroganoff Recipes

The modern way to make this meal involves using strips of beef, as well as mushrooms, onion and a sour cream sauce. The dish is served with noodles or rice. Red wine features in some recipes and white wine in others. This recipe is found in Nordic countries and there is a dish called sausage stroganoff in Sweden, which is made using locally produced sausages. Beef stroganoff is also served there and this is a basic food service dish because it is easy to make lots of it at once.

Portuguese and Brazilians also enjoy this meal and heavy whipping cream is used there instead of sour cream. You can also get chicken stroganoff in Brazil, which is served with potato straws and white rice. It is also served sometimes as a topping for baked potatoes, on pizzas or as a crepe filling. There are actually fast food chains dedicated to this food in Brazilian shopping malls. There are a lot of variations and optional ingredients including ketchup, canned corn, wine and more.

The following recipe makes enough to serve four people and you can serve it hot over buttered noodles or fluffy white rice. This is so easy to make and the flavor is amazing.

What You Will Need:

1 1/2 lbs top round steak, in strips 1/4 cup wine 1 cube beef bouillon 1/2 chopped onion 3/4 cup sour cream 1/4 cup water 10 3/4 oz can condensed cream of mushroom soup 1 minced clove garlic 8 oz canned mushrooms 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley or 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley 1 tablespoon all purpose flour Salt and black pepper

How To Make It:

Add the beef to the crockpot and season it with salt and pepper. Add the soup, mushrooms, onion, and bouillon. Mix the flour with the wine and add the resulting paste to the crockpot. Add the garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and water. Cook for seven or eight hours on low. Stir in the parsley and sour cream an hour before serving.

Easy Recipes: Yorkshire Pudding Filling

When you think about it Yorkshire Pudding batter mix is quite versatile and can be used in lots of savoury and sweet recipes. Pancakes are a firm favourite come Shrove Tuesday and they can be turned into a savoury pancakes quite easily if you add fish, cooked meat, vegetables or chicken mixed with white sauce.

I've got a pretty tasty recipe for Fruit Batter Pudding and I love Toad in the Hole. One of my favourite warming winter meals is a giant Yorkshire Pudding filled with onion gravy and I've even had Yorkshire puddings in a Chinese restaurant but that's another story.

I have had mince and onions in giant Yorkshire puds in cafes but I've never been very keen on mince finding it tasteless unless you add flavourings. What I do like is Yorkshires filled with savoury mince and following you will find the recipe that I use, plus a scone topping recipe:

Savoury Mince Recipe

Before you start prepare and place giant Yorkshires in oven unless you are using the frozen kind.

Ingredients: (Serves 4)

3 large carrots

1 large onion or leek

1 lb (½ kg) minced beef

400g can of chopped tomatoes

60z (150g) garden peas

small can sweetcorn drained

4 oz (100g) mushrooms sliced

½ pint beef stock

pinch of mixed herbs (optional)

2 tablespoons Worcester Sauce (optional)

Cooking oil or lard

Method:

Dice the carrots and slice the onions then fry them together in a saucepan until lightly browned. Take out of pan and drain well. Fry the mince until evenly browned and drain the fat out before adding the carrots, onions, tomatoes and juice, peas, sweetcorn, sliced mushrooms, beef stock and herbs if you are using them.

Bring to the boil and then simmer for 20-25 minutes. When cooked I usually stir in a couple of tablespoons of Worcester sauce for added flavour but it still tastes good without.

To Serve:

Ladle savoury mince into Giant Yorkshire Puddings which should have been cooking at the same time as your savoury mince. Or you can use this recipe as a delicious jacket potato filler and grate a little cheese for the topping.

Cooking Alternatives:

I've made this recipe in a slow cooker or crockpot, pressure cooker, microwave and in the oven and it's been delicious every time. For different meal choices I've topped this dish with dumplings, scalloped potatoes, mashed potatoes and the following tasty scone topping which can be used for this dish, beef or sausage casseroles.

Scone Topping

Prepare savoury mince, beef or sausage casserole and place in a casserole dish.

Ingredients:

6 oz (175g) plain flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

20z (50g) margarine

Approx 1 tablespoon milk

Optional:

20z (50g) grated cheese

and/or 1 oz (25g) dried onions

Method:

Mix flour with baking powder and rub the margarine in until the mixture is like fine breadcrumbs. If using mix in the grated cheese and/or the dried onions at this point. Add enough milk to make a soft dough and roll out on a lightly floured surface until about ½ inch thick.

Cut into rounds with a pastry cutter and place on top of your prepared dish, brush with a little milk and bake for 15 minutes at 200° C, 400° F or Gas Mark 6.

Alternatively you can cut the scone mix into one large round and use as if it's a pie topping and scatter the grated cheese on top instead of using it in the scone mix. This way would require adding at least another 10 minutes onto the baking time.

There you have it a delicious savoury mince recipe to go with your Yorkshire Puddings or baked potatoes and a tasty topping as an alternative, enjoy your meal! If you want more great Easy Recipes or even a free Yorkshire Pudding Recipe just click on the links.

Crockpot Homestyle Beef Stew

The recipe below is the first one I made when I got my crock pot for Christmas 2 years ago. This stew recipe is for a 6 quart slow cooker. Depending on the size of your slow cooker, the amount of ingredients may vary.

INGREDIENTS

Crockpot

1 lb stew meat
1 pkg stew seasoning
3 pkg brown gravy mix
1 regular size pkg of mixed vegatables
3 beef bullion cubes
1 tsp Worchestire sauce
8 cups of water
1 Tbs flour
1 Tbs Butter
3 Medium Potatoes
Cooking oil
Cornstarch*
Onion and Garlic powder to taste*

TECHNIQUE

Step One: Coat a frying pan lightly with cooking oil. (You may also use cooking spray for less calories.) Place 1 lb stew meat in pan. Cook until brown. Meat does not need to be cooked all the way.*To save time, you can brown stew meat ahead of time. After browning, place in freezer. This will keep the meat fresh for a few months. If browning the meat the day before, place in refrigerator.

Step Two: Peel and Dice 5 potatoes. Place in your slow cooker along with the stew meat, gravy mix, stew seasoning, mixed vegatables, bulion cubes, worchestire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, and water. Take flour and butter and mix in a small mixing bowl. Place mixture in the slow cooker. This will help the sauce thicken as your stew cooks.Turn the slow cooker on low. Cook 8-9 hours on low or 4-5 hours on high.

*If your stew is not as thick as you would like at the end of cooking time, take 1 Tbs of cornstarch and mix together with 1 Tbs of water. Place in slow cooker. Repeat the process until you reach the desired thickness.

Incorporate a Crockpot into Your Diet

You may not believe this but there are actually a countless number of crock pot recipes for people who are on a low-fat diet. Apparently, such low fat crock pot recipes are intended for people who are watching their health and their weight very carefully. In this regard, we would want to share at least two of the low fat crock pot recipes that most dieters prefer to prepare.
Arroz Con Pollo is one type of a low fat crock pot recipe that we highly suggest. You will need to prepare such ingredients as two tablespoons of freshly chopped cilantro, two cups of cooked rice, ten ounces of frozen peas that have been thawed, two tablespoons of red wine, one half cup of chicken broth, eight pieces of chicken thighs that do not have skin, two teaspoons of chili powder, one teaspoon of oregano, one clove of crushed garlic, one fourth teaspoon of pepper, and one half teaspoon of salt.
Mix such ingredients as chili powder, oregano, garlic, pepper, and salt together in a bowl. Such spice mixture should be sprinkled all over the chicken pieces. Once each of the chicken pieces is sprinkled with the spice mixture, you may place all of them in a crock pot. The wine and the broth should then be poured all over the chicken pieces. Cover the crock pot and let it cook for at least five to six hours using low temperature. After five to six hours, remove the chicken and set the crock pot on high temperature. Add the peas soon thereafter and cover the crock pot again and let the ingredients be cooked for another seven to ten minutes. The cooked rice as well as the chicken should then be added into the crock pot. Before serving, make sure to sprinkle the freshly chopped cilantro on the dish.
Another low fat crock pot recipe that we suggest is the recipe for Basil Chicken. This is also an easy-to-prepare dish as it only requires few ingredients and can also be cooked while the crock pot is running unattended.
The ingredients include one half whole green pepper that is sliced, one can of cream of celery soup, one half teaspoon basil, one half teaspoon of pepper, and four whole chicken breasts that are skinless.
To begin the procedure for this low fat crock pot recipe, you must place first the skinless chicken breasts in the crock pot. The chicken should then be sprinkled with basil and pepper. The cream of celery soup should then be poured over the chicken pieces. Afterwards, the sliced green pepper should be placed on top of the chicken that is covered with soup. Cover the crock pot and let it cook for approximately eight hours. The crock pot should be set on low temperature for this low fat crock pot recipe. You do not have to wait for eight hours for this recipe to be cooked. There are instances when six or seven hours will do. This recipe only contains four grams of fat and is composed of 55 grams of protein and three grams of carbohydrates.

Crockpot Cooking Tips For Delicious Meals

Crockpot cooking makes it incredibly easy to have a delicious dinner ready and waiting for you when you get home. Simply fill the crockpot with the proper ingredients, turn the knob, and off you go to work or school. Once you get back home, you will be welcomed by the enticing smell of a fully-prepared and delicious meal. Here are a few tips to ensure that your crockpot meals are not only convenient, but tasty as well.

Don't overfill the crockpot

Crockpot

One of the big mistakes new crockpot owners make is over filling it. When you are adding ingredients, try to keep the crockpot level somewhere between half-way and three quarters full. If the pot is filled beyond these amounts, your food will not be cooked properly. If the pot is under filled, you will likely come home to an overcooked dinner because your food cooked too quickly.

Keep vegetables on the bottom

If your recipe calls for fresh vegetables, be sure to place them on the bottom of the crockpot. Vegetables need more time to cook than meat, so you will want to keep them closer to the heat. On the other hand, if you are cooking with frozen vegetables, you can place above the meat because they take less time to cook.

Brown your meat first

A great way to enhance the flavor of your meat is to brown it before you put it into the pot. Browning renders the feat and caramelizes the natural sugars within meat, both of which work to enhance its flavor. After you brown your meat. try deglazing the pan with some wine or broth. Add these delicious pan drippings into your slow cooker for added flavor to your dish.

Keep the lid on

While your crockpot is busy doing its thing, try your best not to remove the lid. If you have to add more ingredients into the mix, add them at one time to prevent the crockpot from losing too much heat. It can be quite tempting to want to smell your food or take a quick taste, but you should try to keep it to a minimum. Each time you remove the lid, you can add about 20 to 30 minutes of extra cooking time.

In the hectic world we live in today, a crockpot is a great way to help free up some of your time. While your off working all day, why not have your crockpot simultaneously working for you?

Programmable Crock Pot

Are you considering the purchase of a programmable crock pot?
Are you searching for a method to decrease your time spent slaving over a hot stove?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you'll definitely be interested in the following info.
Here are 4 vital tips that you need to know before you buy a programmable crock pot.
Programmable Crock Pot Tip #1: The Background
Crock pots in general, and a programmable crock pot in particular have grown to be a must-have machine for any contemporary kitchen. Working mothers across the world have come to rely on these little marvels to help them prepare a home cooked dinner that the whole family can appreciate. The meal preparations are taken care of in the morning hours prior setting off to work or school. The food will be set to cook in a programmable crock pot during the day and will be ready to serve by supper time. A programmable crock pot is perfect for everyone who really wants to save their time on cooking and yet have the ability to serve delicious food to their family.
Programmable Crock Pot Tip #2: Large Crock Pots or Small Crock Pots
As you might expect, a programmable crock pot can be purchased in a number of sizes. A typical family of four will probably be pleased with a five-quart crock pot. 6 quart or 7 quart crock pots are targeted for larger families, or should you have several teenagers to feed.
Small crock pots, sometimes known as mini crock pots are typically 4 quarts in size and are geared for single people or smaller families. Additionally these types of smaller units work well for preparing sauces, dips, or even side dishes.
Programmable Crock Pot Tip #3: Programmable Features
The Programmable crock pot has produced quite an impression on the general slow cooker market. Prior to the 1990's, slow cookers had only a high and low setting, which truly restricted the creativeness of the cook. Nowadays the present day crock pots are programmable, which offers more flexibility and greater opportunity to produce a dinner masterpiece.
They generally use a touch pad that provides a variety of settings, typically 4, 6, 8 or 10 hours. As soon as the unit is programmed, and the fixed time has elapsed, the programmable crock pot changes to a warm setting. This attribute becomes essential on those instances when the cook is running late, or else neglects to turn the heat down manually. With a programmable crock pot there's no need to concern yourself with a fire threat or an over-cooked meal.
Programmable Crock Pot Tip #4: Other Features
Most people find the cleaning up portion of the family dinner to be extreme drudgery. If you are one of those people who don't enjoy washing the dishes, you'll really like the easily-removed lining.
In addition, you might consider a unit which offers several crocks. These handy pots have 2 or 3 little crocks in a single programmable crock pot product. This kind of useful device might be well suited for cooking stews, desserts, soups, etc. for a significant dinner or even a family celebration. One more benefit may be the detachable internal pot, that is detachable and be used as a serving dish without having to shift the contents to a separate serving bowl.
Conclusion:
The programmable crock pot can be a handy kitchen tool for new mothers, working parents, and anybody else who has better things to do rather than slave over a hot stove!

Feel Better With Chicken Noodle Soup in the Crockpot

Chicken noodle soup has been a favorite in families for countless generations. If someone has ever made the homemade treat for you when you were not feeling well then you know just how comforting it can be.

There is evidence that as early as the 12th century healers "prescribed" chicken broth to their sick patients. The broth was poured over pieces of bread, which were known as "sops" evolving into the word we use now, "soup." And today, we finally have evidence that ingredients in chicken soup do indeed help to relieve symptoms of the common cold and similar ailments.

Crockpot

Amino acids in chicken that are released during the cooking process are rather similar to the chemicals in medication prescribed to patients with serious chest colds and bronchitis. Carrots, a vegetable usually found in chicken noodle soup, are an excellent source of vitamins that help to fight off infection. Onions, another primary ingredient of the soup, contain antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory agents to help fight illness.

Recipe for Crockpot Chicken Noodle Soup

What You Need

3 large sized carrots 2 stalks of celery 1 medium sized onion 3 pound broiler or fryer chicken 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon dried basil 3 cups water 16 ounce package noodles, uncooked

How to Make It

Clean and peel the carrots and cut into slices or small chunks. Clean and cut the celery into small pieces. Peel and cut the onion into slices.

Add the carrots and celery to the bottom of a 5 quart crockpot and place the onion slices on top.

If you are using a whole chicken, clean and cut it into large pieces while removing excess fat and the skin. Put the chicken in the crockpot atop the vegetables and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and basil.

Add the 3 cups of water to the crockpot and cook covered on the high setting for one hour. Cook the soup on the low setting for an additional 6 to 8 hours, or until the chicken is done and the vegetables are tender. You can also cook your soup completely on the low setting for 8 to 10 hours.

After cooking time is complete, carefully remove the chicken from the crockpot and set aside.

Add the package of uncooked noodles to the chicken broth in the crockpot and cover and cook on the high setting for 15 minutes. Take care not to overcook the noodles as they will become too soft and mushy. You can also cook the noodles in a pot of boiling water on the stovetop before adding them to the crockpot.

As the noodles are cooking either in the crockpot or on the stove, remove the chicken from the bone and cut into pieces.

After the noodles are done cooking, put the pieces of chicken back into the crockpot and cover. Allow all of the ingredients to sit and warm in the crockpot before serving. If your soup needs more liquid, add some hot chicken broth made from bouillon cubes and allow to warm in the crockpot for 15 minutes before serving.

Feel Better With Chicken Noodle Soup in the Crockpot

Gourmet Cooking With a Crock-Pot

Often, when considering cooking dinner with a Crockpot, people may automatically think of soups, stews, a pot roast or chicken pieces. However, with a little creativity and a spice rack some delicious, impressive foods can be the result.

Slightly altering recipes from a variety of cookbooks and sources, Crockpot cooking need not be mundane. If you are leaning towards a recipe that calls for slow roasting in the oven, use the Crockpot instead!

Crockpot

One of the main reasons for not using the Crockpot with more creative recipes might be the fear of the unknown for some cooks. Trying something new with an long-standing, tried and true appliance can be a worrisome prospect to some and for good reason. However, trying and failing is better than not trying at all! If one recipe doesn't work for you, try the next one, and the next, until you find a grouping of recipes that will work. Always remember to write down the ones that do work, so you'll have the recipes at the ready the next time you wish to try "something new".

The beauty of the Crockpot, when it comes to cooking, is it allows whatever ingredients you are using to marinate in their flavorful juices. If your primary ingredient is a pork roast, a slow cooker helps to create a tender, tasty piece of meat. In altering recipes from cookbooks, always remember, the lid stays on during the cooking stage, therefore any recipe that requires liquids will use less, due to lack of evaporation.

Some suggestions for the Crockpot might be lasagna, linguine with clam sauce, your choice of white or red, macaroni and cheese, fish with stuffing, Swedish meatballs with gravy, adding a layer of egg noodles for good measure, or meatloaf, a staple in most households.

As most gourmet recipes call for wine, flavored vinegars, olive oil or some combination of the three, some of the liquid is provided but when in doubt add a can of flavored stewed tomatoes, liquid and all, to provide some zest to your dinner table. In addition, if you find yourself at a loss for a liquid, you can always add a cup or two of beef or chicken bouillon or broth to add some flavor to whatever it is you're cooking.

Crock-pots can be used to create a tremendous variety of Hors d'oeuvre, entrees, side dishes and desserts. With the array of sizes in which crock-pots are available, the possibilities are unlimited. Given the versatility of cooking with a Crockpot, you do not have to feel trapped with the same old, tired recipes.

Overcoming your fears and trying something new in your crock-pot will be an advantageous and delicious way to feed your family while not spending all your time in the kitchen, both before and after dinner. Try some new recipes in the crock-pot when company comes and give yourself more time to enjoy your company, which is really what entertaining is all about, isn't it?

Gourmet cooking in your crock-pot is obtainable and oh so delectable! Your family will love you for it and guests will marvel at how much time they might think you have spent preparing a delicious, "time-consuming" meal making them feel even more special!
