How To Make Goulash In A Crockpot

Traditional goulash is made with beef, vegetables including onions, paprika, tomato, and spices. The name comes from the Hungarian word for herdsman or cattle stockman. This Hungarian dish is made either as a stew or soup.

You can use hot or mild paprika and a little caraway seed, garlic or wine is also nice in the recipe. In the traditional goulash recipe, onions are fried until they are golden and then the paprika and meat are added, so the flavor of the paprika comes out when it touches the hot fat but it does not get bitter or burn.

You can make this dish using pork, lamb, or veal if you do not want to use beef. The meat is cut into chunks before you use it. Stock or water is also added and then caraway seeds or garlic can go in after it has been simmering for a while.

Put the beef, garlic, and onion in the crockpot and sprinkle the salt and pepper over the mixture. Mix half the water with the paprika and tomato paste and pour this over the top. Cover and cook for eight or nine hours on low. Mix the rest of the water with the sour cream and flour and stir this into the goulash. Cook for fifteen minutes uncovered or until it is thick.

Delicious Slow Cooker and Crockpot Recipes: Steak With Vegetable Gravy or Veggie Chowder

Whether you are a very busy cook who needs to use your crockpot or slowcooker to save time or you just enjoy knowing you can have your meal ready in minutes when you are ready to eat, these crockpot or slowcooker recipes are sure to become family favorites. The Round Steak with Vegetable Gravy is almost a meal by itself. Add a salad and crusty bread, if desired, and you are ready to feel your family a nutritious and hearty meal. The Veggie Chowder is perfect for those who prefer vegetables without meat. If you are a strict vegetarian and don't want to use the chicken and beef bouillon, you can substitute an equal quantity of vegetable broth.

ROUND STEAK WITH VEGETABLE GRAVY

3/4 cup finely chopped carrot
3/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
1 (2 lb) round steak about 3/4-inch thick
salt and pepper
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup catsup
1 tbsp cider vinegar
1/2 cup cold water
2 tbsp all-purpose flour

In crockpot or slowcooker put the carrot, onion, celery and bell pepper. Trim excess fat from the round steak and cut it into 6 equal-sized pieces. Place the meat atop the vegetables. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Combine the catsup with the 1/3 cup of water and vinegar; pour mixture over the steak. Place lid on the pot and cook on low setting for 8 to 10 hours.

Remove the meat from the cooker. Skim the excess fat from the cooking liquid then pour the vegetable/liquid mixture into a saucepan. Return the meat to the cooking pot.

Slowly pour the cold water into the flour blending well; stir into the vegetable mixture. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Place the meat on a serving platter. Spoon some of the gravy over the meat. Pass the remaining gravy, if others want more. Serves 6 to 8 people.

VEGGIE CHOWDER

1 can stewed tomatoes, chopped, undrained
3 stalks celery, diced
2 medium potatoes, diced
2 carrots, sliced
2 medium onions
1 can green beans, drained
1 can corn, drained
1 can peas
2 beef bouillon cubes
2 chicken bouillon cubes
3 cups water

Put all of the vegetables into the crockpot or slowcooker. Combine the bouillon cubes with the water until dissolved; pour over the vegetables in the pot. Place lid on the cooker and cook on low for 12 or more hours.

If you have bought a crockpot recently, you probably have one of the newer models. A lot of these have a saute feature, which means you can saute meat or vegetables in the crockpot itself.

This is obviously preferable to sauteing on the stove, then having to transfer the sauteed ingredient, plus everything else, to the crockpot. A crockpot is a great investment because you can cook everything from beef stew to French onion soup in it.

Converting Stove Top Recipes to Crockpot Recipes

A lot of people wonder how to make their favorite stovetop recipes in the crockpot. A low crockpot heat is about 200 degrees F and a high crockpot heat is about 300 degrees F. Fifteen minutes on the stove equals about an hour and a half in the crockpot on a high heat or four hours in the crockpot on a low heat.

Thirty minutes on the stove is about three hours in a crockpot on a high heat or six hours in a crockpot on a low heat. An hour on the stove is about four hours in the crockpot on a high heat or eight hours in a crockpot on a high heat.

These figures are approximate. It depends very much what you are cooking. Place hash browns on bottom of lightly greased crock pot. Place meat, vegetables, and cheese over top of hash browns. Whisk the eggs with the milk and pour over the rest of the ingredients. Cook on LOW for 10 to 12 hours, until eggs are set in center.

Slow Cooked Breakfast Risotto (Rice Pudding)

As with oatmeal, the list of things you can add to rice pudding is practically endless. Start with the basic recipe and experiment to find your favorite!

1/4 cup butter, melted

1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/8 tsp cloves

1/8 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups arborio rice

1/3 cup brown sugar

4 cups milk ( or you may add 1 cup of fruit juice and 3 cups milk)

1 to 1 1/2 cups fruit of choice, dried or fresh

Mix all ingredients in lightly greased crock pot. Cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours.

Some Different Recipes for Your Slow Cooker or Crockpot: Chowder for Vegetarians and Applesauce

Yes, the crockpots and slowcookers are also for those who don't care for meat. Personally, I eat mostly vegetables because I don't particularly like meat. I grew up with pet animals and never enjoyed eating them. My best friend's family ran a commercial chicken farm. I helped out there, especially after her father's death, and decided I would never eat anything that nasty again! Yes, my dislikes are in my head but so be it! But I know there are many of you out there who don't eat meat for more personal or political reasons. That is your choice and that is fine with me. But I realized almost all my crockpot and slowcooker recipes have meat in them. So in honor of you who don't eat meat, here are a couple of recipes for you. But never fear, meat lovers will enjoy these recipes, too. Just add a sandwich or a chicken breast, etc. and make a meal for all. The Chunky Applesauce is a great and easy way to enjoy apples and by substituting Splenda or other sugar substitutes for the sugar, you can make it a diabetic applesauce. It is also a good way to use up apples if you have too many and they are starting to go soft. And forget buying little jars of baby food applesauce. Your baby will love you for making your own.

BELL PEPPER-CORN CHOWDER
1 cup chopped yellow onion
5 cups frozen whole-kernel corn
2 cans (14-oz each) chicken broth*
1/2 cup water
1 medium red bell pepper, diced
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
2 green onions, chopped

Combine all ingredients, except green onions, in a slow cooker or crockpot; stir to blend and cover the pot. Cook on low to medium setting 4 to 6 hours. Before serving sprinkle each bowl with the chopped green onions and a dash of freshly ground black pepper, if desired.

*Vegetable broth may be substituted. I use vegetable broth and frankly, I think it makes a better chowder. The choice is up to you!

CHUNKY APPLESAUCE
10 large apples
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 to 1 cup sugar (depends on natural sweetness of the apples)*

Peel, core, and slice apples. Place the apples into crock pot along with the water, cinnamon, and sugar. Stir gently to combine. Cover the cooker and cook on low overnight or all day (8 to 10) hours. Delicious served warm or can be kept in the refrigerator in a sealed container for around a week.

*Make this a diabetic applesauce by substituting Splenda granular for the sugar. You probably won't need a full cup unless your apples are really tart!

I really like using my crockpot because I don't dirty many dishes and I can start a meal before I leave for work and its ready when I get home. I love coming home to a house with great cooking aromas.

One of my favorite crockpot recipes is chili. I have several great chili recipes but I really like this tangy version.

CLASSIC CHILI - CROCKPOT STYLE

Ingredients

1 1/2 ground beef

1 1/2 cups chopped onion

1 cup chopped green bell pepper

2 cloves garlic, chopped

3 cans (15 oz. each) dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained

2 cans (15 oz. each) tomato sauce

1 can (14 oz. diced tomatoes, undrained

2 to 3 teaspoons chili powder

1 to 2 teaspoons dry hot mustard

1/4 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 to 2 dried hot chili peppers (optional)]

Directions 

Cook ground beef, onion, bell pepper, and garlic in a large skillet until meat is browned and onion is tender. Stir occasionally. Drain fat and discard. Transfer mixture to a 5 quart crockpot.

Add beans, tomato sauce, tomatoes, chili powder, mustard, basil, black pepper, and chili peppers and mix well. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 4 to 6 hours.

Quick Tips

Spray crockpot with cooking spray for easy clean up.

Use pre-cut onions and peppers and minced garlic.

I like to cook this chili on low because it really give the flavors time to blend. My family prefers mild, not spicy, chili, so I use half of the recommended amounts of chili powder and hot mustard and I also omit the hot chili peppers.when I make this recipe for my family.

Easy Recipes For Your Crockpot or Slow Cooker: Roast, Ribs, and Stew - All Are Yummy!

If you aren't already doing so, get out that slow cooker or crockpot and put it to work for you. You can buy less expensive cuts of meat, cook without heating up your oven or standing over a hot stove, or just put your meal on, go about your day and forget about dinner. Whether you like roast, saucy ribs, or chicken stew, these recipes are for you! Each of these recipes will allow you to go home after a long day and have a healthy dinner on the table for your family quickly and easily.

EASY CROCKPOT ROAST

3 lb beef roast
1 can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1 pkg dry onion soup mix
1 cup water

Place roast in crockpot (or slowcooker) fat side up. Combine the cream of mushroom soup, dry onion soup mix, and the water; stir to blend well. Pour mixture over the top of the roast. Cook on low for about 10 hours.

SLOW COOKER SHORT RIBS

2/3 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
4 to 4 1/2 lbs boneless beef short ribs
1/4 cup butter
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 1/2 cups beef broth
3/4 cup cider vinegar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chili sauce
1/3 cup catsup
1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
5 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 tsp chili powder

In a 1-gallon size zip-top plastic bag, combine the flour, salt, and pepper; add ribs in batches and shake to coat well.

In a large skillet, brown the ribs in the butter then transfer to a 5-quart slow cooker or crockpot. In the same skillet, combine the remaining ingredients. Cook, stirring, until mixture comes to a boil. Pour the mixture over the ribs.

Cover the ribs and cook on low heat for 9 hours or until the meat is tender.

Yield: about 12 servings.

ITALIAN CHICKEN STEW

12 boneless skinless chicken thighs
2 cans Italian-style diced tomatoes
2 cups cubed zucchini
1 cup diced onion
1 cup baby carrots
2 tbsp tomato paste
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp salt
8 cups cooked pasta

Cut chicken into 1-inch pieces. Combine all ingredients except pasta in the crockpot. Cook on low at least 6 hours or until chicken is cooked through. To serve, place pasta on serving plate or bowl and top with the stew.

Put Your Crockpot or Slow Cooker to Work For You With This Marinated Pot Roast Dinner

If you have a slow cooker or crockpot sitting around seldom being used, you are failing to use a great kitchen resource. Whether you work outside the home, just have a busy schedule, or like to put a meal on to cook and forget about it for hours, the slow cooker is your best friend. Try this recipe for a great family meal without much effort on your part! Welcome your family home after a busy day with the tantalizing scent of this delicious meal coming from your kitchen. They are sure to appreciate this roast meal and shower you with praise. There is no need to let them know how easy it really was! This Marinated Pot Roast Dinner will no doubt become a family favorite with requests to have it again and again.

MARINATED POT ROAST DINNER
1 approximately 3 lb beef chuck roast
MARINADE:
1 1/2 cups tomato juice
1/4 cup wine vinegar
1 clove of garlic, minced
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp basil
1/2 tsp thyme
1/4 tsp pepper

Trim excess fat from the roast. Cut roast if necessary to fit into the slow cooker or crockpot. Place the meat in a large zippered plastic bag sitting in a bowl.

For the marinade, stir together the tomato juice, vinegar, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, sugar, basil, thyme, and pepper. Pour the marinade over the meat in the bag. Marinate overnight in the refrigerator, turning twice.

6 small onions, halved
1 cup chopped carrot
1/2 cup cold water
1/4 cup all-purpose flour

Place the onions and carrots in the bottom of the cooker. Place the meat over the vegetables and add the marinade. Add lid to the cooker and cook on low setting for 8 to 10 hours.

Before serving, remove the roast and vegetables from the cooker. Skim excess fat from the liquid in the cooker. Measure 2 cups of the cooking liquid and pour into a saucepan. Return the meat and vegetables to cooker and cover to keep warm.

Blend the cold water slowly into the flour until smooth. Stir the flour mixture into the cooking liquid in the saucepan. Cook while stirring until mixture is thickened and bubbly. Place the meat on a warm serving platter and top with the vegetables. Pour some of the gravy over all. Set the remaining gravy on table and pass as needed.

Yield: 6 servings

Crockpot Chicken Soup With Black Bean and Chipotle Peppers

As we begin to hunker down for the impending cold weather, we are craving dishes that will warm us all the way down to our toes. Apparently, my family members are not the only ones with cold extremities. I have received four requests for crockpot recipes in the past week. Still flexing its muscles from its successful slow cooking of our Family Crockpot Applesauce, my crockpot was up for the challenge. The inspiration for this recipe came from Sunset Magazine's Crockery Cookbook; however, I took several liberties with the recipe, adding tomatoes and black beans, and increasing the seasoning. The result was a flavorful, nourishing soup that took no more than time than chopping a few vegetables and browning some chicken. Mission accomplished.

In a large crockpot, I combined onions, carrots, and chipotle peppers, along with oregano, garlic, and black beans. To add an extra layer of flavor, chicken thighs are browned in a skillet for 2 minutes per side before being nestled into the crockpot. The final step is to add chicken broth, water, and canned tomatoes. Simply turn on the crockpot and let it do its magic.

During the last half hour of cooking, rice is added to the mixture to round out the soup. The final step involves removing the removing the chicken meat from the bones, stirring it back into the soup, and tossing in a handful of chopped cilantro. Brighten up the soup with a squeeze of lime and you have a filling meal that requires minimal effort.

Recipes for Tasty Crockpot Meals: Crock-Style Beans With Ham and Dutch Style Beef and Cabbage

When I hear people say they don't have a crockpot or that they have one but never use it, I am shocked. I personally think they are one of the best kitchen items ever invented. What could be easier or more economical for the busy cooks of today? Crockpots and slow cookers are so versatile, you can cook almost any type of meal in them. Today's article gives you a choice of two very different dishes from Beans with Ham to Beef and Cabbage, a nod to the Dutch part of my heritage. One or maybe both are sure to suit your family.

CROCK-STYLE BEANS WITH HAM
1 lb dry navy beans
8 cups water
6-oz diced cooked ham
1 cup chopped yellow onion
1/2 cup molasses
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp mustard
1/2 tsp pepper

In a Dutch oven or large saucepan, bring the beans and water to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, covered, 1 hour. Remove from the heat and allow to cool somewhat. Drain the beans, reserving a cup of the liquid.

In crockpot, place the beans, cup of liquid, ham, onion, molasses, brown sugar, pepper and mustard. Cover and cook on low heat 12 hours.

DUTCH-STYLE BEEF AND CABBAGE
1 1/2 lb round steak, 3/4-inch thick
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 tbsp canola oil
3 large yellow onions, sliced
3/4 cup hot water
1 tbsp vinegar
2 tsp instant beef bouillon granules
1 small head cabbage

Trim any excess fat from the steak and cut meat into cubes. Combine the flour, salt, and pepper; coat meat on both sides with mixture.

In a skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil. When the oil is hot, quickly add the steak and brown on all sides. Drain off the fat and place the meat into a slow cooker or crockpot.

To the meat in the pot, add the onions. In the same skillet meat cooked in, combine the hot water, vinegar, and bouillon granules. Stir, scraping bits from the skillet. Pour the mixture into the pot with the beef and onions. Cover the pot and cook on low for 8 hours.

About 15 minutes before serving time, cut the cabbage into 4 or 5 wedges and cook in a large sauce pan of boiling, salted water until tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Drain well.

To serve, pour the beef mixture over the cooked cabbage wedges.

Slow Cooker Recipes to Try

I am including some of my favorite recipes passed down from my mother, grandmother, and as far back as my great grandmother. Including some of my favorite appetizers made easy and also some family meals and special dishes.

French Onion Meatballs (my favorite for any birthday, football or baby party)

2 pkgs of frozen meatballs
1 jar of beef gravy
1 pkg of Lipton's dry onion soup mix

Place meatballs crockpot in bowl combine gravy and soup mix and add to meatballs. mix well

Cover and cook on low setting for @3hrs. Serve with fondue fork or long toothpicks.

If you like can also cook meatballs in Hunts chili sauce with grape jelly and have Cocktail Meatballs. Cook the same way in crock pot but only ingredients is 3 bottles of chili sauce and half jar of grape jelly. Makes great appetizer for football party. Can also do same ingredients with cocktail weinies.

Slow Cooked Chili ( always a fall favorite)

2lbs hamburger meat (ccoked) 1 small onion, finely chopped garlic salt (to taste) 1 can diced tomatoes, undrained 1 can tomato sauce 2 cans pinto beans, undrained 1 can green chiles 3 tsp chili powder 2tsp worchestershire sauce.

In slow cooker combine all chili ingredients, mix well

Cook, covered on low setting for 1 to 2 hrs

Top with sour cream, shredded cheese, and sliced green onions if desired.

Pull Pork Sandwiches

3lb Boneless Pork Tenderloin, 12 oz A&W Diet Root Beer, 1 bottle SweetBaby Ray's BBQ sauce

Put pork and root beer in crock pot on low for 8 hours. When done pork should be falling apart, drain root beer and pull pork apart. Return pork to crock pot and add BBQ sauce keep on low for another 2hrs and serve with buns. Great BBQ sandwiches!

Brown Sugared Ham ( wonderful Christmas recipe)

8lb Bone in Ham, 2 cans of sliced pineapple in juice, box of brown sugar

Mix half of juice from pineapples with 1 cup brown sugar coat bottom of crock pot, Put ham flat side down on brown sugar put sliced pineapple on top of ham keep in place with toothpicks. Mix remaining pineapple juice with 1 cup brown sugar and pour on top of ham. Cover and cook on med setting for 8hrs.

Three Best Crockpot Recipes

What dinner meal takes normally fifteen minutes to prepare but tastes delicious? A meal made in a slow cooker of course. If you really want to save time but still make a great dinner for your family, then take a few minutes in the morning to get the ingredients ready, toss them into the cooker and go.

There are tons of good recipes available now days, but how do you know which are the best crockpot recipes? Should you select chicken or beef, soup or stew, spaghetti or pizza?

We've taken some of the guess work out of it all and provided a few of the best crockpot recipes (in our opinion anyway.)

Easy Crockpot Beef Stew

6 large potatoes, peeled and cut into pieces
6 large carrots, peeled and cut in 1 1/2 inches
3 lbs of beef stew meat
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp. pepper
3 Tbsp of flour
1-12 oz bag of onions
1 cup condensed beef broth
1 8 oz. can tomato sauce
1 tsp. salt

Layer potatoes, then carrots on the bottom of the slow cooker, line top with beef. Sprinkle with soy sauce, salt, pepper, and flour. Mix the beef broth and tomato sauce and pour over everything and cook on high setting for 5-7 hours.

Tortilla Chicken

1 doz. corn tortillas
3 cans cream of mushroom soup or cream of celery soup
1 (8oz) pkg. Jack cheese, grated
1 (8oz) pkg. Cheddar cheese, grated
2 cans (4oz each) chopped chiles
1 boiled de-boned chicken (3 to 4 cups chopped)
1/2 med. onion, diced

Layer in a slow cooker the soup, tortillas, cheese, chicken, chiles, onion, soup; repeat using all of the ingredients. Cook on low setting for 6-7 hours.

Spaghetti Slow Cooker Recipe

2 lbs. ground chuck, browned and drained
1 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
2 to 3 tsp. Italian seasoning
2 cans (4 ounces each) sliced mushrooms, drained
6 cups tomato juice
1 package (16 ounces) dry spaghetti, broken into 4 to 5- inch pieces

Mix all ingredients, except dry spaghetti, in slow cooker. Stir well. Cook on low 6-8 hours or high 3-5 hours. If cooking on low setting, turn to high during last hour and add dry spaghetti.

How to Make a Delicious Crockpot Pumpkin Pie

The holidays are nearly upon us and the weather is becoming a bit cooler. One of the best things about cool weather and the holidays is everyone is in the mood for some scrumptious food and drinks. Nothing can say welcome home or happy holidays like a delicious pumpkin pie.

Interestingly, you can also make various types of recipes besides meat and vegetable recipes while using your crockpot. If you enjoy using your crockpot at home to make hearty meals that your family enjoys, you really should try out a few crockpot dessert recipes for the holiday or any day.

What You Need

1 can of solid pack pumpkin 15 ounce
1 can of evaporated milk 12 ounce
2 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup baking mix or biscuit mix
2 Tablespoons melted margarine or butter
Whipped topping
Non-stick cooking spray

How to Make It

Prepare your crockpot by applying a layer of the non-stick cooking spray.

Begin by melting your margarine or butter over a low heat in a small saucepan or even the microwave oven.

Using a small mixing bowl you will beat the 2 eggs and then set them aside.

Next, while using a large mixing bowl you will add the 15 ounces of pumpkin, the entire can of evaporated milk, the 2 ½ teaspoons of pumpkin spice, and the 2 teaspoons of vanilla flavoring. Before blending, you will also add the ¾ cup of sugar, the 2 beaten eggs, the ½ cup of baking mix or biscuit mix, and the 2 Tablespoons of melted margarine or butter.

Mix thoroughly and then pour the batter into the crockpot you have prepared by coating it with the non-stick spray.

After pouring the mixture into the crockpot, replace the lid and then cook the recipe on low for about 3 to 3½ hours. You can check the temperature while using a thermometer, since some crockpots may vary in temperature. You want the dish to reach a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can serve this hot or cold. Adding a nice size dollop of whipped topping is an extra treat that many people enjoy while eating delicious pie recipes.

My Grill and My Crockpot

In warm weather, my grill and my crock pot are like feuding siblings vying for my attention at dinnertime. I love cooking with my crock pot and find it perfect during any season, but during the warmer months there's nothing like the unique taste of food from the grill.

Much like my crock pot, I don't limit my grilling to meat. Vegetables, potatoes, I love to grill everything! And, much like any other type of cooking, grilling can be as easy or as complicated as you choose.

Quick and Easy Recipes for the Grill

One of my favorite quick and easy grilling recipes is to marinate chicken breasts in Italian dressing. Throw the dressing and the chicken in a container in the morning, and at dinnertime throw them on the grill. Within 30 minutes (less or more depending upon the thickness of the chicken breasts) you'll have dinner on the table. Pair it with pre-made pasta salads from your grocer's deli and you've created a quick and easy stress free meal.

Do you like to make barbeque chicken? I love it on the grill, but hate the wait. I boil my chicken beforehand, cooking it fully. Then I marinate in my favorite barbeque sauce. When ready for dinner, I grill for 30 minutes. Knowing the chicken is pre-cooked, I don't worry; I am simply grilling for flavor.

Kabobs are another summertime favorite. I cut up the veggies and meat, marinate in bottled marinade sauces, skewer, and grill. Rather than use bamboo skewers where I have to worry about soaking them for hours, I use metal skewers.

I also love grilling vegetables. Cut veggies into bite size chunks, marinate in olive oil, black pepper, and seasoned salt, and grill. Once again, in 25-30 minutes, you have a tasty side dish to serve and haven't heated up your kitchen and house cooking it! I have used a combination of the following vegetables: red and yellow onion, red, green, or yellow bell pepper, zucchini, mushrooms, and asparagus.

There is nothing like sweet corn on the cob in late summer. Soak the ears, husks on, in your sink for at least 45 minutes. Grill over a medium low flame for 30-45 minutes, husk, and enjoy!

Of course, there's also grilled sandwiches, but don't limit yourself to burgers. Chicken breast sandwiches, tuna steak sandwiches, get creative!

Grilling and Your Crockpot

Although grilling can be an elaborate event, like all my other recipes I like to keep it quick and easy. Use ready made marinades, rubs, and steak sauces. Start your marinade in the morning before leaving for work. By doing this you're not waiting for hours once you get home for the food to marinate; most meats don't suffer from marinating a few extra hours.

Rather than choosing between your grill and your crock pot, choose both. If making barbeque chicken and you don't want to boil it, use your crock pot. Place the chicken in your crock pot with 1-2 cups of water, cover and cook on low 8-10 hours. When you get home, remove the chicken from the crock pot, brush with barbeque sauce and grill, continually brushing with sauce the entire grilling time.

I have mentioned brats before; where I am from they're a staple that must be prepared correctly. I use my crock pot and my grill, cooking the brats in 1-2 cans of beer with one chopped onion and 2-3 cloves of minced garlic in my crock pot on low for 8 hours, then grilling for flavor and color right before serving.

Better yet, use your grill and your crock pot side by side. Use one for meat and the other for sides, but literally use them side by side. The Great Crockpot Yogurt Saga

One day, as the earth rotated, and the birds sang, Lola passed around a link to a Crockpot Yogurt recipe. I was intrigued enough to say "Hey! I need to make that!" I hate how exorbitantly expensive just plain old yogurt is so I thought this would be a great economical method of always having yogurt around.

My first batch turned out great. I shared my success with Vicky and all was eaten. It was just as thick as a normal tub of Fat Free store bought yogurt but I wanted my second batch to be a little thicker without having to do anything special like straining through cheesecloth or adding gelatin.

Below is the process I followed exactly for this second batch. Mixed a little more powdered milk in this one. Tasted superb and thickened beautifully. Just perfect!

Ingredients
1 large crockpot with at least a low setting
3 quarts of milk, 2%
3/4 cup of fat free yogurt as a starter
1 1/4 cups of powdered dry milk (helps it thicken)
2 tablespoons of vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of honey
2 large THICK cotton blankets or bath sheets.

1. Turn crock pot on LOW. Pour all 3 quarts of milk into crock pot. Cover with lid. Cook on the LOW setting for 2.5 hours.

2. After 2.5 hours, UNPLUG the crockpot. Let it sit, with the lid on, for 3.5 hours.

3. At the end of 3.5 hours, scoop approximately 2.5 cups of the hot milk out of the crockpot, and pour into a small plastic bowl.

4. With a whisk, gently stir in 3/4 of a cup of fat free yogurt, 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract, 1 1/4 cups of dry milk powder and a teaspoon of honey.

5. After mixing that for approximately 30 seconds, add it back into the crockpot and blend the mixture together for another 30 seconds.

6. Put the lid back on.  Spread first blanket or towel on counter or table where yogurt can sit UNDISTURBED for 9 hours. CAREFULLY lift and place ENTIRE crockpot in middle of the spread out blanket or towel. Hot milk splashes so please be careful. Wrap it up like a tender little package. Then do again with the second thick cotton blanket or towel. Check the time and let it sit for 9 hours.

DO NOT TOUCH IT. DO NOT CHECK IT. FORGET IT. DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. LEAVE IT ALONE. 9 HOURS.

7. When 9 hours has passed, carefully unwrap the package, and lift the lid. If you take a spoonful, it should behave like you see in the video here. Take the crockpot portion (not the base) and put it in the refrigerator if you have the room, and let it continue chilling.

A clear "liquid" should rise to the top like you usually get in yogurt containers. Some people like to mix this into the yogurt and eat it. I like to drain mine off for thicker yogurt. You can soak it up with a clean paper towel if you would like.

Otherwise, after it chills, you are all done! Divvy up into separate containers for storing and eating.

You just made yogurt in a crockpot :)

There are dozens of methods, and dozens of recipes and dozens of different ways people have to make yogurt, and they will all offer their advice. I'm just giving you the method that worked for me, flawlessly, with less than 15 minutes of "touch time" and fuss. Make it this way at least once, get the hang of it - then try all the other cool stuff.

HINT: If you start this at 4pm (providing you go to bed around 11pm and are home at 4pm) you won't be tempted to peek at it while it's resting for the 9 hours.

5 beef bouillon cubes
5 cups warm water
Salt, black pepper, garlic powder to taste

How to Make It

Trim the excess fat from the chuck roast and cut the meat into bite sized cubes or pieces. Add the meat and the rest of the ingredients to the crockpot.

Cook the stew on high until the meat is cooked thoroughly and the vegetables are all tender. Alternatively, if you have eight to 10 hours to wait, cook the stew on the low setting.

You may also want to add a package of soup mix and vary the vegetables you use such as adding tomatoes in place of potatoes.

Crockpot Bean Recipes

Beans are a staple in a lot of traditional Mexican recipes and there are many different types to choose from, including kidney, pinto, navy, black beans and more. This ingredient can be paired with meats like beef, pork, or chicken or used to make vegetarian meals more filling.

The following recipes show you how to make wonderful dishes with this ingredient, using your slow cooker. When using this ingredient, some recipes will instruct you to soak fresh beans overnight, which obviously means the meal should be started a day ahead.

In other recipes you can use canned ones and some recipes give you the choice of whichever you prefer to use. Soaking them overnight might not be as convenient as opening a can, although this is usually a cheaper way of making such meals, since dried products tend to be more economical than canned ones.

Pizza Style Pinto Beans

Rinse a pound of pinto beans and take out any little stones. Cover them with water and let them soak overnight in the slow cooker. Drain the water off, then put them back in the crockpot with four chopped tomatoes, three and a half cups of water, a teaspoon of salt, a crushed garlic clove, half a chopped green or red bell pepper, a chopped onion and a pinch each of rosemary and oregano.

This is an especially popular dish with kids, and it encourages them to eat their vegetables too, especially if you chop them extra fine so they are hidden.

Crockpot Cowboy Beef Stew

Cut a two pound rump roast into small cubes and roll them in a package of taco seasoning. Put them in the crockpot. Add a fifteen ounce can of Mexican style tomatoes, a small can of green chilies, two beef bouillon cubes, a chopped onion, and eight ounces of tomato sauce.

Cover and cook for six hours on low or until the beef is tender. Drain and rinse two fifteen ounce cans of red kidney beans and stir these into the stew. Cook for half an hour, and then serve topped with shredded cheddar cheese or sour cream. This recipe will delight anyone who enjoys authentic Mexican food recipes because the ingredients are so typically Mexican.

Easy Soup With Ham

Soak a pound of northern or navy beans overnight and then drain them. Add them to the crockpot with two quarts of water, a pound of ham or meaty ham bones, a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of black pepper.

Cover and cook on high for five to six hours or low for ten to twelve hours. Chop an onion and saute it in butter. Add the onion to the slow cooker halfway through the cooking time. Mash the beans, using a potato masher, two hours before serving. This will thicken the mixture and give it a better consistency.

What Exactly Is a Crockpot?

The word 'crockpot' is a name which is actually a trademarked name, but is often used as a generic term. The terms 'crockpot' and 'slow cooker' have come to be used interchangeably.

'Rival' is the original holder of the trademarked term 'Crock-Pot'.

The Rival Crock-Pot / slow cooker has been one of the most important cooking tools for busy families since its introduction in 1971. Slow cooking is a great way to provide delicious home cooked meals for people and families on the go and produces flavorful meals time after time.

This appliance is made of fired clay and is usually glazed and surrounded by a metallic housing. It contains a controlled heating element to maintain the slow cooker temperatures whuich allow food to be cooked over longer periods of time.

Typically a slow cooker will have just two heat settings, and a glass lid is used to retain the heat and moisture. An important tip to be sure to follow is this: Don't lift the lid while it is cooking the food! Letting the heat escape in this way will add twenty minutes to the cooking time! The lid is important as it prevents escape of hot water vapor which would, if permitted, lead to lowering the internal water level, loss of heat and drying out of the contents.

A slow cooker works in a much different way than a pressure cooker which allows much higher temperatures than the boiling point of water. Because the lid of a slow cooker is on very loosely, the temperature inside will never get above the boiling point of water. Any vapor that does occur condenses on the lid and returns as moisture back onto the food.

Because of the nature of slow cooking, food can be cooked for longer than expected with no harm to the food. In fact, your meats become more tender when they are cooked like this over longer periods of time.

Recipes for these cookers must be adjusted to compensate for the nature of the cooking. Often water must be decreased. Most (probably all) come with recipe booklets. Many cookbooks with slow cooker recipes are available and there are numerous recipes on the Web. A small number of cookbooks seek to make complete dishes in a slow cooker using fewer than five ingredients while others treat the slow cooker as a serious piece of culinary equipment capable of producing gourmet meals. With some experience, timings and recipe adjustments can be successfully made for many recipes not originally intended for these cookers. The long, moist nature of the cooking method allows for lower quality cuts to be used.

And even though a slow cooker takes longer to cook the food, it will actually save you time! How is this possible? Well, you can quickly load the ingredients in the morning and turn it on. That right there is the bulk of your time -not very much! And at dinner time, your home will greet you with a flavorful aroma fit for a king or queen!

Chicken Crockpot Recipes - Easy & Quick To Prepare!

Cover crackpot and turn to low and cook for 8-10 hours. Before serving make rice. Serve over rice. Leftovers can be reheated in microwave.

OVEN: Put vegetables in bottom of a greased pan. Sprinkle
vegs with tapioca. Add chicken to pan. Combine all other ingreds. Except rice in a small bowl. Pour over chicken. Cover pan tightly with foil. Bake in 300 deg. oven for 2 hours. Before serving make rice. Serve over rice.

>> Crockpot Chicken Cacciatore

2 Med Onions; peeled, sliced

3 lb Chicken; cut up

2 c Garlic; minced

1 c Tomatoes; 16 oz

1 c Tomato sauce; 8 oz

1 ts Salt

1/4 ts Pepper

1 1/2 ts Dried oregano; crushed

1/2 ts Dried basil; crushed

1 Bay leaf

1/4 c Dry white wine

Spaghetti; cooked

Place onions in slow cooker. On top of onions place chicken pieces,
garlic, tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, herbs and wine. Cover
pot.

Cook on low 6 to 8 hours, or high 3 to 4 hours. Serve chicken

Making Crockpot Lasagna

When I tell people I make lasagna in my crockpot, they always look at me and ask if I'm sure. They can't believe that their crockpot can be used to make this wonderful dish.

This actually began as an experiment and has since become a family favorite.

I begin with ground turkey. The packages of turkey are just over a pound. I brown the meat with chopped onion. If you like other seasonings with the meat, this is the time to add them in. Once the meat is brown I add in one jar of Prego sauce (don't throw away the jar). You can use any brand of sauce or even make your own.

Once the meat is done, it's time to create the lasagna casserole. I spoon a bit of the meat sauce on the bottom of the crockpot. I then use regular lasagna noodles. Do not buy the type that are no boil. You want regular lasagna noodles. I generously coat the noodles with ricotta cheese, then break to fit the crockpot. I cover the bottom of the crockpot, over the sauce with the noodles. Place the noodles cheese side up.

I chop up one head of cauliflower and one head of broccoli. I dice a few zucchini. I also wash half a bag of spinach leaves. I put a generous layer of the mixed vegetables on top of the noodles. I top this with Italian blend cheese. Just generously sprinkle on top of the vegetables.

Repeat layers until the crockpot is full. My crockpot is smaller, so I only have two layers of vegetables. End your layering with ricotta covered noodles on top.

Remember that empty jar you saved after browning the meat. Put a quarter cup of water in the jar and shake to create a very runny tomato sauce. Just before plugging in the crockpot, pour the water over the top of the top of casserole.

Cook on high for four hours. After four hours, I took off the lid and pushed the top noodles down to absorb a bit of the liquid. I turned it down to low and cooked one more hour.

We are not a mushroom eating family. If your family likes mushrooms, try adding those in, either instead of one of the other vegetables or in addition to the others.

My family enjoys the taste of the Italian blend cheese. I know others prefer a Parmesan cheese. Try Italian blend in the casserole and then shredded Parmesan on the top.

You can also try this recipe with an Alfredo sauce instead of a tomato sauce. As I mentioned, the first time I made this dish, it was an experiment. So try your own experimenting to find the right combination of ingredients for your family.

Turkish Crockpot Recipes

Recipe for Turkish Pilaf

This simple dish can be prepared without a crockpot if you prefer. Just let the dish simmer for seventeen minutes and serve it. Using a slow cooker brings out the flavors though and improves the texture of this pilaf, so if you have one you can make this recipe in advance and let it slow cook to perfection.

What you will need:


16 oz can chopped tomatoes
2 beef bouillon cubes
1 minced clove garlic
1 teaspoon white sugar
2 cups uncooked instant rice
1 sliced onion
1/4 cup butter
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup boiling water

How to make it:

Brown the rice in the butter in a pan, then add the remaining ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil and turn the heat down. Let it simmer for twelve minutes, then transfer everything to the slow cooker and cook on low for two or three hours, or until the rice is tender. Remove the bay leaf and serve.

Easy Crockpot Recipes With Meat
